Michigan closing in on Ohio State in recruiting rankings after Savion Hiter commitment

Michigan football climbed back into the Top 10 of Rivals’ Team Recruiting Rankings Tuesday morning when Savion Hiter announced his commitment to the Wolverines. The five-star running back is the second five-star pledge in the 2026 class.

Going into the fall, U-M now sits at No. 10 in the team recruiting rankings, directly behind Ohio State. Hiter’s commitment nearly propelled the Wolverines past the Buckeyes. Michigan sits 0.02 points away from leaping into ninth.

Hiter is the No. 8 recruit nationally and the top-ranked running back in the 2026 cycle. He joins five-star edge rusher Carter Meadows— the fifth-ranked recruit in the country— to form the Wolverines’ five-star duo. Assuming both prospects sign with the program in December, this would be U-M’s second-consecutive recruiting class with two signees ranked in the Top 15 of the Rivals Industry Ranking.

Michigan finished last cycle ranked No. 6 nationally, and Hiter’s commitment serves as a critical step towards the program reaching those heights once again. In addition to Meadows and the five-star running back, the Wolverines also hold Top 100 commitments from tight end Matt Ludwig and offensive tackle Malakai Lee

Following Hiter’s announcement, Michigan will try to land a fourth offensive line pledge and at least one more linebacker to help fill out the class. Flip season is approaching fast, and Michigan will need to secure a couple of unexpected pledges to finish close to the Top 5 in the rankings again.
