Will Joe Burrow's turf toe injury require surgery? Giants’ Jameis Winston becomes popular name on Bengals’ trade radar if QB is out for the season

The Cincinnati Bengals will lose Joe Burrow for a minimum of three months following a Grade 3 turf toe injury suffered during a 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Burrow’s turf toe injury will require surgery.

The Bengals got an uneven, but winning, effort from backup Jake Browning (21/32 passing, two touchdowns, three interceptions). But now Browning needs a backup.

A popular name popping up for that role is Jameis Winston. The former Heisman Trophy winner at Florida State University is currently Brian Daboll’s QB3 behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart.

Winson has accepted his spot on the totem pole in New York.

“I prepare as if I'm the starting quarterback. Preparation is preparation. So, every single week, I'm the first one in this building, and I'm preparing as if I'm starting on Sunday, Monday, or Thursday,” Winston said last week.

That doesn’t mean he can’t embrace a new home elsewhere. USA Today’s Jacob Camenker deemed Winston the “prime” candidate to be the Bengals’ QB2 until Burrow returns – or perhaps rather, if he returns, should Cincinnati remain competitive in his absence.

“If the Bengals are going to trade for a quarterback, Winston might be the prime candidate. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft has made 87 starts during his career and has the type of gunslinger mentality that could work in a Bengals offense sporting great talent at the skill positions,” Camenker wrote.

“Winston is playing on a two-year, $8 million deal that is commensurate with the pay of NFL backup quarterbacks. The Bengals could easily absorb that salary, install Winston as the backup behind Browning and ready the 31-year-old veteran to start should Browning stumble.”

Winston is doing nothing in New York. Behind Browning on the Bengals’ depth chart is…no one.

This deal should be made ASAP.
