The debut of Philip Montgomery as Virginia Tech’s interim coach couldn’t have gone any better as the Hokies whipped the Wofford Terriers 38-6 in Blacksburg. It was Virginia Tech’s first win of the season as the Hokies improved to 1-3.
Tech is now done with the non-conference schedule and opens the ACC portion of its schedule next Saturday night in Raleigh against the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
Quarterback Kyron Drones had arguably his best game in a Virginia Tech uniform on Saturday, completing 27 of 32 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Drones also rushed for two touchdowns. After struggling since the second half of the Vanderbilt game, Montgomery appeared to intentionally call a game to get Drones comfortable. There were several quick, easy throws for Drones, allowing the receivers to make plays after the catch. He did lose another fumble, which continues to be a problem.
Defensively, Virginia Tech showed up to play, holding the Terriers to 141 total yards, including -1 rushing yards. Defensive tackle Kelvin Gilliam Jr. had four tackles, including two for loss and 1.5 sacks, while fellow DT Kemari Copeland had a half-sack and an interception.
Senior running back P.J. Prioleau was excellent on Saturday, catching seven passes for 65 yards and rushing for 17 yards on three carries. Marcellous Hawkins paced VT’s ground game with 79 yards on 13 rushing attempts.
Several Hokies did not play. Montgomery said after the game that it was a combination of injuries and “other things.”
Clearly, the Hokies expect more players to enter the transfer portal in the coming weeks. It closes on Oct. 15, which is 30 days after Brent Pry was fired.
