Greetings, BBN!

The Top State this week was one full of surprises. Vanderbilt dropped 70 on the Georgia State Panthers—their most points in a game in over 100 years. Tennessee dropped 56 points on UAB to improve to 3-1 heading into a game with Mississippi State. Ok, that one wasn’t much of a surprise, but how about the Memphis Tigers bringing it home for the Group of Five? The Tigers hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks in a back-and-forth, down-to-the-wire contest that was decided on a Hogs fumble at the Memphis 7-yard line with just over a minute to go.

Memphis is now 4-0, with nothing but the cream-puff schedule of the American Conference ahead of them. Vandy is also 4-0, with more momentum than they’ve had in decades, and Tennessee would be 4-0 if things had gone a bit differently in overtime against Georgia two weeks ago. But first, let’s give some attention to our runner-up state:

Honorable Mention: Indiana

Two teams from the Hoosier State have AP-ranking numbers attached to their name and big hype surrounding their potential to compete on the CFP stage. Both obliterated their competition last weekend, with the Indiana Hoosiers running circles around then top-10 Illinois in a 63-10 blowout and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish smacking Purdue 56-30. The only thing keeping them from being the Top State was, well, Notre Dame’s convincing win came at the expense of a Purdue convincing loss. It’s looking like it’ll be another long season in Boiler-town with nothing but conference games remaining on a schedule they’re already 2-2 in.

The Top State: Tennessee

The Volunteer State, as mentioned in the intro, hit the jackpot last Saturday. The Tennessee and Vanderbilt wins were expected, but the Memphis win was a big one that might give the state a chance at the Group of 5 playoff spot. The only team in the state that didn’t win was Middle Tennessee, which couldn’t get it done against Marshall. The other schools carry more weight, though, and offset the Blue Raiders’ setback with their victories. Thus, Tennessee is the Top State of Week 4 of the 2025 college football season, thanks to the Memphis Tigers’ fumble recovery at the 7-yard line with just over a minute to play.
