Padres closer Robert Suarez predicted to become free agent

The Padres might have another potential free agent to deal with in closer Robert Suarez. While the closer holds an $8 million option for next season, there's a good chance he turns free agent this winter. Suarez is on a five-year, $46 million deal, but has an opt-out in place after three years.

MLB insider Mark Feinsand believes Suarez might pass up on the two-year, $16 million remaining on his contract to earn close to his market value.

"An All-Star in each of the past two seasons, Suarez has proven to be one of the more reliable closers in the game," Feinsand wrote in a story. "With a league-high 34 saves, Suarez will surely find a higher AAV than $8 million in free agency despite his age, so he will decline his options for 2026 and 2027, which must be exercised or declined simultaneously after the season."

Suarez's market valuation is over $14 million

According to Spotrac, his market value is nearly double ($14.6 million) what he is currently earning. Meanwhile, FanGraphs predicts a $15.5 million valuation. That valuation arrives on the back of his stellar performances this season. He currently leads the majors with 34 saves, owns a 3.09 ERA, and averages near 99 mph on his fastball.

Moreover, Suarez is a back-to-back All-Star and has been one of the best closers in the National League over the last two seasons. While the 34-year old doesn't have age on his side, his experience should grab him a good deal in the offseason.

Should Suárez opt out, the Padres will lose a dominant closer and will need to find a replacement.
