Nebraska TE Mac Markway is out indefinitely coming into this season as he deals with further issues with his ACL. Now, after his most recent procedure on it this week, Matt Rhule provided the latest on how he’s doing since he’s been back in Lincoln.
Rhule mentioned Markway’s surgery during his press conference on Tuesday. He said the redshirt sophomore had a successful operation done as he’s now back with the program.
“Yeah, he went down to Dr. Cooper in Dallas, got back yesterday. He seemed like he was in good spirits. He was crutching around,” said Rhule this afternoon. “You know, the surgery was successful. I think Dr. Cooper even commented it was like, the largest hamstring graft he’d ever taken. I mean, that’s how big and strong Mac is. So, like I said, Mac was in good spirits.”
After starting his career with a season at LSU, appearing in a dozen games with three receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown while with the Tigers, Markway is entering his second year with Nebraska. However, he is yet to appear with the Cornhuskers as he tore his ACL within a month of arriving as a transfer. A year later, that injury is still affecting him as he’s now had a second surgery on that ligament.
Having just had the surgery, he won’t be traveling with Nebraska as they head to Kansas City for their season opener against Cincinnati on Thursday night. Instead, Markway will stay behind to again begin his recovery.
“You know, he won’t be able to go to the game,” said Rhule. “He’ll stay here. But, he’ll begin his rehab process now.”
“We’ll see what the future holds in terms of him and his decisions,” Rhule said. “But, for right now, that was a positive.”
