Last year, Marcel Reed got his first taste of the Lone Star Showdown. The Texas vs. Texas A&M rivalry made its return after the Longhorns joined the SEC, and they left College Station with a 17-7 victory.
This season, the series moves to Austin. During an appearance on SportsCenter Thursday for its “50 States in 50 Days,” Reed shared his excitement for the rematch – and the opportunity for a “little bit of revenge.”
Texas A&M will close out the regular season at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium Nov. 28 in primetime. Reed said the Aggies are setting a high bar in Year 2 under Mike Elko, and that season finale is certainly circled on the schedule.
“As juiced up as anybody else gets for a rivalry game,” Reed said when asked about his excitement for the rivalry game. “I’m really excited to get the opportunity to play Texas again, get a little bit of revenge and also do it at Austin. That’s our expectation this year. We hope to go out there and dominate, really, from Week 1 all the way up until then.”
Reed completed 16 of 23 passes for 146 yards in last year’s game against Texas. He also added 14 carries for 56 yards in the running game. Now back in College Station as the full-time starter, he’s hoping to take a leap forward after Texas A&M finished 8-5 a year ago.
He’s also getting some feedback from one of the program’s all-time greats. Johnny Manziel has been around the program more and recently spoke with Reed about his game. As for what he thinks Texas A&M will do in 2025, Manziel hopes the Aggies can build some positive momentum. He also had some high praise for their head coach.
“I had a good conversation with Marcel Reed this week,” Manziel said Thursday. “I’ve been watching some practice film and stuff, trying to give him some pointers that I think could help him out. But [I’m] excited for Elko. The vibe he brings, what he means to the program. He embraces the Aggie Spirit.
“So, expecting better things. I say this every single year, but I feel confident with where we are. We really have some players. He’s done a good job recruiting. So, you know, I’m hoping for the best.”
Texas A&M will get the season underway Aug. 30 at Kyle Field. UTSA will come to town for the season opener at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
