Game Thread #155: Milwaukee Brewers (94-60) @ St. Louis Cardinals (75-79)

After a forgettable first game of this three-game series, the Milwaukee Brewers will take another shot at the St. Louis Cardinals tonight as their magic number to clinch the National League Central sits at three games.

Pitching tonight for Milwaukee is Chad Patrick, who is perhaps trying to make a final push at being considered for a postseason start should the Brewers advance past the Division Series (where they could get by with three starting pitchers). Patrick was impressive in relief in his last outing, with a perfect inning in which he struck out the side against the Angels on Tuesday. With Jose Quintana injured and Jacob Misiorowski struggling, it’s entirely possible that Patrick, with a strong showing tonight, could put himself in a good position to be considered the Brewers’ fourth rotation option after Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff, and Quinn Priester.

Starting for the Cardinals tonight will be righty Miles Mikolas, who picked up a win over the Brewers on Sunday when he allowed two runs in five innings. Mikolas is approaching 150 innings on the season, but it hasn’t been an especially good one: he comes in with a 4.80 ERA and 4.95 FIP and is striking out just 5.7 batters per nine innings.

The Brewers made a roster move today, but not the one that most fans were hoping for: they’ve designated Joel Payamps for assignment, and replaced him on the roster not with Robert Gasser but with the 30-year-old right-hander Bruce Zimmermann. Zimmermann has not appeared in a major league game with the Brewers; he made 38 appearances (27 starts) across four seasons with the Orioles from 2020-23, and signed with the Brewers as a minor-league free agent after the 2024 season. He’s thrown 138 innings at Triple-A Nashville this season, and pitched to a 4.11 ERA with 7.1 strikeouts and 2.0 walks per nine innings.

The move for Zimmermann is a bit puzzling given how good Gasser has been at Nashville, but it’s worth noting that the Brewers have still not named a starter for tomorrow’s game and there could be another move in the pipeline. It’s also worth noting that Zimmermann is on a hot streak, and in his last four outings has pitched a combined 23 innings while allowing only three runs, a 1.17 ERA.

Speaking of hot streaks, the Brewers are keeping Jake Bauers in the lineup tonight while also getting Andrew Vaughn into the game by putting Bauers in left field. Bauers is batting .438/.486/.688 in his last 11 games (14-for-32, two homers, two doubles). There are no other surprises in the lineup, with Christian Yelich serving in his regular DH role.

First pitch tonight is at 6:15 p.m. on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
