Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Admits Disappointment in Andy Reid's Decision During Loss to Cardinals

Aug 11, 2025 7:36 PM EDT

The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their preseason with a 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. While there was some disappointment brought about by the team’s defeat in its first outing, there was a lot to smile about for Chiefs fans now that the preseason is finally underway.

Nevertheless, supporters who were hoping to see Patrick Mahomes make his mark on the game were left rather frustrated after the two-time All-Pro quarterback was pulled out of the contest by head coach Andy Reid after just three plays.

Reid was taking no risks with Mahomes in this one as the six-time Pro Bowler finished with one completed pass, one passing yard and one touchdown in his brief cameo.

Speaking to NFL reporter Kay Adams on Monday, Mahomes admitted to feeling some disappointment in Reid’s decision to hold him out of Saturday’s loss.

“It was definitely a little bit of a bummer,” Mahomes said. “You want to get out there and get a couple of snaps in.

“I always say, you want to kind of get hit just to kind of feel like you’ve been a quarterback. Not hit hard but just enough that you feel we’re not in a yellow jersey anymore.”

Mahomes’ next chance to make a more significant impact would be on Friday as the Chiefs travel to Lumen Field to battle the Seattle Seahawks in their last road game of the preseason.

There is no guarantee that Reid will let Mahomes loose against the Seahawks, but the three-time Super Bowl-winning QB should get more run in the Chiefs’ second preseason matchup.
