Yellowjackets report: UWS men's soccer grabs first win of 2025

Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer got into the win column just in time before the beginning of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference season by getting a late penalty kick to defeat St. Olaf 3-2 on Friday, Sept. 12 at Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium.

The Oles went into the nonconference contest without a loss and with a No. 22 national ranking, and they took a lead in the fifth minute. However, Jake Kidd equalized for UWS about five minutes later, and Seth Davidson put UWS into the lead in the 32nd minute.

That edge didn’t quite make it to halftime, as the Oles made it 2-2 just before the break.

St. Olaf was reduced to 10 men after Ben Beckman received a straight red card in the 55th minute, and after 20 minutes, UWS finally made it pay off, drawing a foul in the penalty area from St. Olaf keeper Jack Hobday before Davidson converted the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute.

UWS held on from there for its first win of the season in four attempts.

Earlier in the week, UWS got a goal from Kidd in the 17th minute but Macalester took the lead for good four minutes later and went on to a 2-1 victory in Superior on Wednesday.

Luke Lockman made four saves for UWS in both games.

The Yellowjackets begin conference play with a home game vs. North Central on Wednesday.

Wisconsin-Superior women’s soccer did score its first goal of the season though it’s still waiting for a first win after a draw and a loss in nonconference play last week.

Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Yellowjackets played to a 0-0 draw at Concordia-Moorhead with goalkeeper Quinn Clark making seven saves.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, UWS rallied from an early 2-0 deficit at Wisconsin-River Falls, while Niamh Larson (20th minute) and Julia Taylor (36th minute) broke a season-opening scoreless streak of nearly 380 minutes.

However, UWRF took the lead back just before half and went on to a 4-2 victory.

Baylee Nygard was credited with 17 saves between the sticks for UWS.

The Yellowjackets (0-4-1) begin UMAC play at home vs. North Central on Wednesday.

‘Jackets take three of four

Wisconsin-Superior ended up one win short of a perfect weekend at the UW-La Crosse Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The Yellowjackets defeated Luther 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-23) and Monmouth 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 26-24, 26-24) on Friday, then took down St. Norbert 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-17) on Saturday before a 3-1 (25-20, 13-25, 25-16, 25-19) loss to the hosts.

UWS hit .333 for the match against Luther, led by nine kills from Makenna Hohbein. Savanna Hering (Superior) led the Yellowjackets in digs (eight) and aces (two).

Hohbein stepped up with 19 kills and 15 digs against Monmouth to lead the way in both categories.

Hering notched 18 digs in the match against St. Norbert, while Katlyn Jones had 11 kills and Hohbein 10.

UWS hit .462 in winning the second set against UW-La Crosse but lost despite 15 kills from Hohbein and 19 digs from Hering.

UWS (7-5) will host its own Stinger Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior on Friday and Saturday with matches against Concordia-Moorhead, Augsburg, Wisconsin-Stout and St. Scholastica.

Wisconsin-Superior’s team total of 300 was good enough for top honors at the UMAC preview meet in Becker, Minnesota on Thursday, but just a share, as Northwestern also landed on the number.

Matthew Unger of UWS lost out on medalist honors in a playoff after both players shot even-par. UWS teammate Andrew Rude was one of three players a shot off the lead.

UWS took third in the women’s meet with 356, with Abby Schintz finishing in a tie for third individually at 12-over, four shots off the lead.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
