With the Yankees fresh off a 5-2 loss to the Cubs, Aaron Judge had no interest in discussing his latest milestone on Saturday.
“I honestly got nothing to be honest. Would have been great if we got a win today to do something like that,” Judge, never one to bask in his own success, said shortly after crushing the 350th home run of his career. “I’ve been surrounded by a lot of great teammates, been on some good teams, so they really put me in the best position to go out there and perform at my best. So it’s really just a shout out to all the teammates I’ve had over the years.”
The two-run shot, hit off Cubs reliever Brad Keller in the ninth inning, made Judge the fastest player ever to reach 350 longballs. He needed just 1,088 games to do so.
Mark McGwire held the previous record, though it took him 1,280 games to get there.
“He’s definitely a legend,” Judge said of the former Athletic and Cardinal, who was connected to performance-enhancing drugs during his 16-year playing career.
Judge said that he’s spoken to McGwire, a fellow Californian, over the years, though they haven’t discussed hitting in too much detail. They first connected when Judge broke his rib in 2020, as McGwire’s son was dealing with the same injury.
They talked about how Judge healed and have kept in touch since.
“He’s been great over the years,” Judge said.
Judge has been pretty great as well. With a 3-for-4 performance on Saturday, the All-Star and reigning MVP is leading the league with a .358 average and a 1.204 OPS. He also has 81 RBI.
His 35 home runs, meanwhile, are second in baseball – Seattle’s Cal Raleigh has 38 – and the most ever by a Yankee prior to the All-Star break.
“I don’t know what to say about it,” Aaron Boone said, “because I just think he’s playing in a different league, really.”
