Wings Make Exciting Paige Bueckers Announcement During Win vs. Mercury

Seems things are getting a bit serious for Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, a team that appeared all but left for dead back when they were 1-11 and appeared to be on their way to a second straight No. 1 overall WNBA draft pick. Bueckers, of course, was the first pick back in April of this year, and while she had some up-and-down showings early in the season, she has hit her stride with consistency lately.

Bueckers scored 23 points on just 11 shots (eight makes) in the 98-89 win on Thursday over Phoenix, which has been among the best teams in the WNBA this season. Since that awful start, the Wings have now won five of their last seven games, including wins over Atlanta and Golden State.

Her output marked the fifth time in her last six games (she missed the Wings' win on June 28) that she has hit the 20-point mark. And the Wings let the people know.

Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers (5) reacts against the Phoenix Mercury during the first half at College Park Center.

The team posted on Twitter/X: "The youngest in charge Today marks Paige's 7th 20-point game with 23 points & puts her at No. 3 in franchise history for most 20+ point games by a rookie (7)!"

Bueckers has, remember, played in only 14 games this season.

It was an impressive win for the Wings, and would have been so even if they'd been fully healthy. But the team was without rotation players Arike Ogunbowale, DiJonai Carrington, Maddy Siegrist and Ty Harris, who were all out with injuries. Four rookies started, including Bueckers.

It was also the cherry on top of a memorable day for Bueckers, who won the league's Rookie of the Month for June. She, characteristically, downplayed it.

“Individual awards are really team accomplishments,” she said. “I wasn’t gonna scream and jump up and down, but I was very grateful.”
