Who is Mr. Fantasy, and is he actually Riverdale star KJ Apa? That’s the question many people have after seeing on their social media feeds a singer in a black wig who bears a striking resemblance to the former Archie Andrews.
It all started on Aug. 19, when “Mr. Fantasy” uploaded his first video to TikTok. “Hello TikTok. Hello Los Angeles. Hello world,” the performer posted on the video-sharing platform. Though he did not introduce himself as such, commenters immediately declared that “Mr. Fantasy,” who speaks with an English accent, was actually Apa, a New Zealand-born actor known for Riverdale as well as movies like the just-released romantic drama The Map That Leads to You alongside Madelyn Cline. Yahoo reached out to Apa’s reps for comment.
“Is this for a show or a movie I have to know why ur doing this KJ,” one fan commented on Mr. Fantasy’s first video. One questioned if Riverdale was really this “traumatic” that it led to the existence of the Mr. Fantasy personality.
Some commenters are unsure that Mr. Fantasy is Apa. (Mr. Fantasy’s hair and teeth are not exactly a match for Apa’s typical look.) But others pointed out that these two share more than a passing resemblance: Apa’s tattoos are visible in many of Mr. Fantasy’s videos, suggesting that these two are, indeed, the same guy. Thus far, Apa has not claimed Mr. Fantasy as his alter ego.
Since his Aug. 19 post, Mr. Fantasy has posted a dozen more videos on TikTok. In one post, he talks about the “room he’s renting” and that he’s “living with a guy called Blaine.” In another video, he waxes poetic about “making it” in the entertainment industry while staring out at the Hollywood sign.
And it doesn’t seem like Mr. Fantasy’s time on TikTok is ending. On Sept. 2, the musician released “part one” of a music video for his self-titled first song, which featured Mr. Fantasy in a variety of colorful costumes walking around Los Angeles. The track, which has disco vibes and is also available in full on Apple Music, was well-received by many commenters.
“Why is this song actually so good,” one commented. Another added, “I think this might be in my Spotify wrapped.”
Lili Reinhart, Apa’s costar on Riverdale, even commented on the Mr. Fantasy video with a simple “Oh my God.”
Exactly why Mr. Fantasy is a thing is unclear, but if he really is Apa, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the actor, known primarily for dramatic roles, has explored comedy online. During the filming of Riverdale, Apa would regularly post videos under the persona “Fifi” — the name of his official, verified TikTok account is even “fifiisqueen.” The Fifi persona, however, did not come with a wig.
And Apa has also shared music before. In addition to singing a lot across seven seasons of Riverdale, he dropped the indie rock album Clocks in 2021.
“Music has very much been my way to express myself here in Vancouver, while I’ve been kind of stuck on a show, where as much as I am grateful for it, it’s just different,” Apa said in an interview with NME in October 2021. “When you’re on a set and you’re playing a character for so long, there’s a lot of rules and guidelines and directions that you have to follow that you don’t necessarily get a lot of say in. But music has always been, you know, the one thing that I have full control over.”
