What they’re saying nationally after New England Patriots finally draft a receiver

It took until Round 3, but the New England Patriots finally added to their wide receiver corps in the 2025 NFL Draft.

With the No. 69 overall pick, the Patriots took Washington State wide receiver Kyle Williams, a well-regarded prospect that’s a solid value at that point on Day 2.

Here’s a roundup of reaction around New England and the NFL to the Patriots waiting until Round 3 to grab a receiver:

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN

“He is fast. I’ll tell you what – versatile. He’s not a guy who’s a one-trick pony. He’s not just a deep threat. He will do the dirty work. He’ll block. He’ll go in traffic and make tough catches. I love Kyle Williams one of the most underrated receivers in this draft.”

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Network

“He’s someone who can win early, and that speed plays, it shows up, it’s legitimate. He plays faster than a 4.4 flat when you watch him. He’s an explosive player.”

Joel Klatt, NFL Network

“He’s got quarterback in his background. I think that shows up in his instincts and his overall feel of the field.”

Chris Simms, former NFL quarterback

“My man Kyle Williams. WR2 this year. Blown away by the film. Quickest feet in the draft combined with real acceleration. He runs away from people all the time. Pats and Drake Maye got a gem.”

Mark Daniels, MassLive

“Great pick. I really like him. He’s an X-receiver who caught 70 passes for 1,198 yards with 14 touchdowns last season.”

Mike Renner, CBS Sports

“Kyle Williams is the best pure separator in the draft class. Couldn’t love that pick more for Drake Maye.”

Jordan Schultz, Fox Sports

“The league’s worst kept secret has been that every team loves Williams. Sensational after the catch. Another weapon for Drake Maye.”

Josh Norris, Underdog Fantasy

“Low key - one of the best big play generators in this class. Awesome releases. Even won after the catch on screens. An awesome fit with Drake Maye.”

Alex Barth, 98.5 The Sports Hub

“Kyle Williams was a late riser in the process but a super fun player. Explosive, can separate at all three levels and is dangerous with the ball in his hands. I think Stefon Diggs will be a great influence on him.”

Warren Sharp, football analyst

“Williams’ elite YAC skills, man-beating ability, and late-career surge make him a serious sleeper — and in the right system, he could outperform plenty of bigger names from this draft class."

Haydin Winks, Underdog Fantasy

“Drake Maye is going to love Kyle Williams. Nasty, nasty man. He’s better than anyone other than Diggs in that WR room.”

Phil Perry, NBC Sports Boston

“Williams may look like a slot, but he was used primarily on the outside at Washington State. Played about a quarter of his snaps from the inside. Averaged 17.1 yards per catch last season.”

Andrew Callahan, Boston Herald

“The Patriots have needed a WR like Williams (separation skills, high win rate vs. man coverage) forever.”
