West Virginia looks to break midweek funk against Pitt on Tuesday

No. 12 West Virginia has dropped each of their last two midweek games against regional rivals Penn State and Marshall. On Tuesday, they will face another regional rival in Pitt as they will look to put their recent midweek woes behind them.

The Mountaineers will look to win their ninth straight game against the rival Panthers, and they will turn to Chase Meyer as their starter for the game.

WVU is coming off a 3-2 loss two weeks ago to Penn State on the road, and then a 7-6 loss to Marshall at a neutral venue in Charleston last week.

Meyer has been a pivotal bullpen piece for WVU this season, but after not seeing the mound this past weekend against Texas Tech, West Virginia head coach Steve Sabins said he would make it a point to get Meyer in the game this week against Pitt.

"Tuesday, I think it would make sense to maybe get him an inning. Whatever maximizes him to be ready to win a game and throw a lot of pitches would be the goal. So, probably get him a touch on Tuesday, I believe," Sabins said on Sunday.

Meyer is 8-2 on the season and has a 2.45 ERA. He has a fastball that reaches the upper 90s to go along with a slider as his two main pitches. He's tallied 49 strikeouts in 33.0 innings pitched this season.

West Virginia is coming off a 2-2 week where they lost to Marshall, and lost one game to Texas Tech before winning the final two games of the series against the Red Raiders.

Pitt comes into the game having won four straight, including a sweep over Virginia Tech this past weekend. The Panthers are 24-21 on the season, including 15-6 in non-conference games.

These two teams faced off earlier this season, and WVU got the better of Pitt, beating them 11-1 (8 inn.). In the game, WVU's Gavin Kelly led the Mountaineers, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. West Virginia's offense totaled 11 hits, while Pitt's offense was held to just four total hits.

Pitt is expected to start Drew Lafferty on the mound, who has a 6.92 ERA in 39.0 innings pitched this season. Lafferty did not pitch in the first matchup against the Mountaineers.

WVU comes into the game ranked No. 20 in the latest RPI rankings, while Pitt is ranked No. 54. As it stands, this is a Quad 1 game for both teams.

First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh, and the game will be televised on ACCNX.
