Coco Chanel once said, "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off." For several stars attending the Met Gala on Monday night, that meant leaving their pants at home.
Sabrina Carpenter, Cynthia Erivo, Hailey Bailey and Blackpink's Lisa were among the famous faces who went pantsless for fashion's biggest night in what seems to be the major trend of the evening. Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton men's creative director, was influential in Carpenter pulling off the look.
“He was like, ‘You’re quite short, so no pants for you,’” the “Espresso” singer told Vogue correspondent La La Anthony on the red carpet. “So here we are. Here we are.”

This year's theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which celebrated the legacy and influence of Black fashion and dandyism. Erivo told Vogue her Givenchy look paid homage to the rococo era as she stepped out in bloomers.

Brat summer was so last year, but maybe Charli XCX is trying to usher in a pantsless summer? The British singer was on trend in Ann Demeulemeester, designed by Stefano Gallici, as she embraced a gothic look.
“With tailoring being such a key element of this year’s theme and a core part of dandyism itself, I felt like they would be prepared to make something tailored to me but also something that referenced elements of dandyism,” she told Vogue. “I’ve always been drawn to how they’ve subverted elements of classic tailoring and how they’ve played with androgyny to create something fearless and unique.”

Williams also dressed Lisa, who transformed a men’s blazer into a boned basque jacket layered over a corset. The White Lotus actress wore Louis Vuitton-monogrammed tights. According to a press release from the company, the lace “replicates elements of an artwork by the American artist Henry Taylor depicting portraits of figures who have been a part of the artist’s life.” (So no, it’s not “Rosa Parks underwear.”)

Williams's wife, Helen Lasichanh, was naturally on trend as she wore a black leather corset top and Louis Vuitton tights.

Model Hailey Bieber was without pants — and husband Justin Bieber — at the star-studded event as she rocked a black blazer minidress by Saint Laurent. Although the singer sat this one out, he proudly showed off his wife's look on his Instagram stories.

Doja Cat got the bodysuit memo, and the crystal-pinstriped feline look was courtesy of Marc Jacobs.
“I’ve never worn anything with such a special silhouette,” she told Vogue. “And, thankfully, it’s the most comfortable thing I think I’ll ever wear to the Met Gala, too!”

In custom Valentino, model Amelia Gray Hamlin had one of the night's buzziest creations.
“Black dandyism was flamboyant, daring, unique and individual to the Black community and culture and through that we wanted to go bold and take risks that we may not have taken before,” her stylist Danyul Brown told WWD. “For us, it was about honoring the era of the Black dandy and tailoring that to what felt right for Amelia’s aesthetic too. For me, my styling aesthetic has and will always been inspired by the dandy and Black dandyism so this has been an incredibly exciting theme for me to work with.”
