These 10 maxi dresses at JCPenney could totally pass for designer, from $28

I live in NYC, so I don't have much closet space. It's a bit ironic, seeing as I'm a shopping editor — I have nowhere to store my favorite finds! So I have to save space when I can; for instance, I pack away sweaters in the spring and summer, and pull them back out in the fall. That's why I'm always looking for items I can wear for more than a few months out of the year, and one such find is a maxi dress.

I can wear maxis with flats and a cardigan in the spring, flip-flops in the summer and booties and a denim jacket in the fall. Talk about a good investment, especially when you consider the cost per wear! Even better, investing doesn't actually have to mean spending all that much. JCPenney has maxi dresses that are so stylish, you'll think they're designer — only your wallet will know better. You can wear them to a late-summer dinner, a tailgate party, the office or even for apple-picking once September rolls around. Seriously, you'll get a lot of use out of these babies, and they start at just $28.

This dress has a modest silhouette that keeps you covered — short sleeves, a high neck and a long skirt — but sports a bold print that you'll be excited to show off. Wear it with boots in the fall like the model above, but if you can't wait (I don't blame you!), toss it on with flip-flops for the rest of summer.

This dress looks similar to Anthropologie's ultra-popular but pricier Somerset dress, and I love this rich green tropical pattern. Pair it with heels, wedges, flats or flip-flops, and when the temps start to drop, add suede boots and a cardigan.

Leave it to Levi's to make a fabulous denim chambray dress. This one is an especially great transitional piece to wear from summer into fall. When the temps drop, pair it with boots for a Western feel or ballet flats to keep things flirty and feminine.

Now this sleek option is admittedly dressier than some others on this list, but the soft knit fabric still gives you the ability to comfortably wear it with sandals to a nice dinner or the office. You could also take your cue from the model and slip on a pair of stilettos for a cocktail party or another more formal occasion. The wrap waist is uber flattering and helps camouflage any lumps and bumps in the midsection.

A high neck, bold pattern and flowy skirt add to the sophistication of this eye-catching style. (Actually, the print reminds me a lot of a dress I saw at Reiss in London a while back.) The soft and stretchy woven fabric is comfortable to wear, and there are hidden pockets!

Go bold with hot pink — why not? This soft twill maxi is the dress you need to stand out at a fun event. Wanna tone it down just a bit? Throw on a pair of platform sandals and a denim jacket and hit the town. You'll surely earn a few compliments.

Looking for the ultimate day-to-night dress? This maxi is the epitome of that style. You can wear it to the office and out to happy hour and dinner, all without changing. The belted waist flatters your shape, while a ruffled skirt adds some interest and pockets (score!) keep things practical.
