The Texas high school football season is seeing more parity across the board than what the state has seen in a few years. That’s making for some exciting action not only on the gridiron, but also when it comes to the Lone Star State high school football Top 25 rankings.
Duncanville got knocked off the top of the rankings after having another bye week as North Crowley reclaims the No. 1 spot. So which other teams got to take advantage and move up the rankings?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Texas high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Sep. 16.
1. North Crowley Panthers
Returning to the top of the mountain for Texas high school football is North Crowley (3-0) after another week of narrowly coming away with a victory. Last week, the Panthers eked out a 28-27 win over an upset-minded Guyer bunch.
What head coach Ray Gates and his staff found out in the last couple of weeks is who potentially their starting quarterback will be for the rest of the season in Demarcus Harris, who has provided a spark for the Panthers behind center.
The Panthers features what is one of the most talented defensive secondaries in the Lone Star State, which includes players like Texas Tech commit Aaron Bradshaw, three-star safety Elijajuan Houston, four-star cornerback Jerry Outhouse and Colorado State commit Thomas Cook.
It’s a quick turnaround this week for Gates and the Panthers as they take on Rockwall on Thursday night.
2. Duncanville Panthers
Duncanville (1-0) was finally able to take the field in Week 2 against a South Oak Cliff squad that upset North Shore the previous week.
The Panthers were able to stave off the Golden Bears in a 35-28 victory, with quarterback Maximus Denson debuting and totaling 242 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
Duncanville continues to be considered a state title contender in the UIL’s Class 6A, Division I classification. Other key players this fall to watch for from the Panthers are four-star edge rushers Kevin Ford (Florida commit) and Landon Barnes (Ole Miss commit), wide receiver Trenton Yancey and cornerback Braylon Edwards (SMU commit).
Panthers return to action this week when they face
3. Southlake Carroll Dragons
If first few of weeks for Southlake Carroll tells folks anything, it is that the Dragons are a team that won’t look much different compared to last season whatsoever. That includes looking at how their offense produces points on a week-to-week basis.
The Dragons (3-0) started the season off with a bang when they cruised to a 49-0 rout of Midland and followed it up with a 35-7 thrashing of Hebron. Southlake Carroll’s latest victory was a 52-3 thrashing of Byron Nelson last week.
Pittsburgh commit Angelo Renda and his favorite target, Ohio State pledge Brock Boyd, who hauled in 111 passes for 1,868 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2024, remain the state’s top quarterback-wide receiver tandem. Renda through two outings has thrown for 885 yards and eight touchdowns.
This week the Dragons face their toughest test of the season to date when they take on an undefeated Trinity team.
4. Aledo Bearcats
Despite last year’s starter Gavin Beard transferring to All Saints Episcopal, which opened the door for Nash McElree to emerge as the team’s QB1, and the Aledo Bearcats (3-0) have looked just fine in the first couple of weeks.
McElree hasn’t had to do much as the team has leaned on their ground game, which rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns on the ground back in Week 1. Aledo took care of business the following week against a solid Lancaster squad, coming away with the 18-0 win and then easily dispatched Brewer, 54-7.
Up next for Aledo is a road tilt with Birdville on Friday night.
5. Allen Eagles
The five-time UIL state champion Allen Eagles (3-0) have been dominant through three games as they opened with a 46-13 victory over Midland Legacy and then breezed by Cedar Hill, 38-0. Last week the Eagles thumped Rock Hill in a 70-14 rout.
Allen will continue to be heavily favored in the coming weeks until a October meeting with No. 6 Prosper.
The Eagles saw the Week 1 debut of freshman quarterback Ty Snell with the team after the passer transferred from Lipscomb Academy during the offseason. Snell completed 9 of 11 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in the win over Midland Legacy.
Senior Jeremiah Daoud has taken the bulk of the snaps behind center for the Eagles, with the quarterback throwing for 325 yards and four touchdowns.
