He then replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold with Jeremie Frimpong, who is pretty much the perfect candidate to come in for the academy graduate.
And now Hughes is on a mission to complete a deal for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, signing that duo and beating competition for them from the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich would be an incredible piece of business.
But that's not the only coup, Hughes has pulled off this summer. He's already secured Liverpool's second arrival in the transfer window and he's done it by beating 'giant' clubs in the process.

Liverpool's second signing of the summer is Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia. The Hungarian international is the second player from his nation to currently represents the Reds.
He'll join Dominik Szoboszlai in the Liverpool first team, where he's expected to occupy the number three role behind Giorgi Mamardashvili and Alisson Becker.
That means he'll also be playing U21 football in the Premier League 2 where he'll be tasked with adjusting to the demands of English football.
It's an exciting and long-term signing for the Reds. Pecsi is highly rated and has a growing reputation among European clubs.
His former club's sporting director, Balazs Toth confirmed that Liverpool were not the only club in for his signature. The Puskas Akademia sporting director told M1 as per Nemzeti Sport in an interview that there were a host of clubs who had made calls about the Hungarian U21 international.
But in the end, Liverpool beat them all to Pecsi's signature.
"We have seen year after year during our work that he is a very talented player and he certainly has a beautiful future ahead of him. In recent times, giants clubs have been interested in him and have cast their nets on him," Toth said.
Based on that, it certainly sounds like Liverpool have done a brilliant job at spotting Pecsi's talents and securing his services.
