YouTube approached Jason Kelce to be part of its coverage for next Friday’s Week 1 contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil. ESPN turned down the idea, according to Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports.
Kelce, 37, joined ESPN‘s “Monday Night Countdown” last year following his retirement from the NFL. The former Philadelphia Eagles center has a massive presence on YouTube, as he hosts the popular “New Heights” podcast alongside his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. One of the most recent episodes, featuring a conversation with Taylor Swift, has 21 million views on YouTube.
Front Office Sports previously reported that ESPN recently instituted a policy that does not allow its broadcasters to appear on YouTube or Netflix games. Last season, Netflix had a Christmas Day game. ESPN talents Mina Kimes and Laura Rutledge appeared on the studio show.
Jason Kelce won’t be on Netflix Week 1 NFL broadcast
So, Kelce won’t be part of the league’s first ever game to stream live for free on YouTube. NFL Network‘s Rich Eisen and Kurt Warner will be on the call for the game. Stacey Dales and Deestroying will be on sideline duty. The studio crew is made up of Kay Adams, Cam Newton, Derek Carr, Tyrann Mathieu and Brandon Marshall. Kelce can still be heard on Monday Night Countdown this season, serving as a studio analyst.
Kelce wrapped up a potential Hall of Fame career after the 2023 season. The seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro spent the entirety of his 13-year career with the Eagles. Kelce helped Philadelphia win its first Super Bowl in the 2017 season. He signed a three-year, $24 million contract with ESPN in early 2024.
“At the desk I’m on, there are a lot of experienced guys that have done it for a while,” Kelce said last year of his new role at ESPN. “Knowing that I’d be on a desk with experienced people who would make me look better than I am was certainly something that was intriguing.”
