Marcelo Mayer had a strong week for the Worcester Red Sox and was rewarded with the league’s weekly honor.
The Boston Red Sox prospect was named the International Player of the Week after he batted .460 with three home runs, 12 RBI, nine hits and amassed a 1.530 OPS. Mayer had 21 total bases over the course of the week, as well.
The shortstop has had a lot of success in Worcester this season. In 23 games for the WooSox, Mayer has a .280 batting average with seven home runs and 34 RBI.
Mayer’s hot start to the 2025 campaign has led to many Red Sox fans questioning why he has yet to be called up to the big leagues. The 22-year-old dealt with a back injury last year that caused him to miss the final two months of the season after Mayer was promoted to Triple-A.
“Number one with Marcelo is his health. We want to see him withstand the ups and downs of the season from a health standpoint,” WooSox hitting coach Doug Clark said recently. “And that’s not only physically, but mentally. These kids are not 30 years old. They’re very young, and they’re very susceptible to ups and downs and how they deal with them. And that’s where we come into play as coaches. But that’s something that he does well already.
“He’s a tremendous talent,” Clark continued. “We can’t wait for him to get what he deserves, and that’s to be a champion up there with Boston.”
