TORONTO — There’s a chance Masataka Yoshida will fly back to Boston this week to be checked out there.
The 31-year-old outfielder — who underwent an offseason right shoulder labral repair — has been rehabbing at the JetBlue Park complex in Fort Myers.
“The throwing part of it didn’t go too well this week,” manager Alex Cora said here at Rogers Centre before Boston’s game against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. “So when we get back, he might be there (in Boston)."
The Red Sox will return from their road trip to open a six-game homestand Friday. They will welcome the Twins to town.
Cora said head athletic trainer Brandon Henry wants to see Yoshida in person. He still is experiencing soreness.
“This week it hasn’t been great,” Cora said.
Cora had said over the weekend that Yoshida was not close to a rehab assignment.
Yoshida had hope at the beginning of spring training that he would be ready for Opening Day.
The Japanese outfielder appeared in 11 Grapefruit League games during spring training. He batted .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and double.
He served primarily as Boston’s DH last year. But with Rafael Devers locked into the DH spot full-time this year, Yoshida needs to be able to play outfield.
