Rams could eye Kirk Cousins as replacement for Matthew Stafford

Things continue to get more and more odd as it pertains to the Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford. Per Adam Grosbard of the LA Daily News, Stafford was expected to practice last Monday - he has still yet to take the practice field.

The lingering back injury appears far worse than originally anticipated, which could put the Rams' Super Bowl hopes in serious jeopardy. And while all the noise coming from the Rams beat is that they love Jimmy Garoppolo, it's never a good sign when the team is hyping up the backup quarterback. With that in mind, the Rams could take a big swing and bring in someone who Sean McVay is very familiar with.

Kirk Cousins is still on the Atlanta Falcons' roster, despite Michael Penix being the starter. Cousins signed a $180 million deal with Atlanta last offseason, but a rough middle stretch of the season caused his benching in favor of the Washington product. The Rams could be the team that ends up trading for Cousins and reunite him with McVay, who was Cousins' offensive coordinator in Washington ahead of getting the Rams' head coaching job from 2014-16. In 2015 and 2016 as the starter, Cousins topped 4,000 yards in each season, as well as a 4.917-yard season with 25 touchdowns in 2016.

Cousins is a large upgrade over Jimmy Garoppolo, and he could do more than keep the ship from sinking if Stafford is out long-term. It's a move that should at minimum be discussed internally, and at maximum executed.
