The Los Angeles Lakers will look to upgrade the center position this offseason. After trading Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic, the Lakers had a very obvious hole in their frontcourt that needs to be filled.
They could try to address this via trade or free agency. If they choose the latter option, one of the biggest names that will hit the market is Milwaukee Bucks big man Brook Lopez, who also played for the Lakers during the 2017-18 season.
NBA insider Matt Moore reported on his Substack that the general consensus is that Lopez won't return to Milwaukee next season, writing, "I’m not expecting the roster to look the way it does now... most everyone I’ve spoken to assume Brook Lopez is gone."
Following the news that Lopez is likely to depart from the Bucks, Silver Screen & Roll's Edwin Garcia pitched why the Lakers should try to reunite with Lopez this offseason.
"The Lakers should at least consider it," Garcia wrote. "He may not be the vertical lob threat Luka Doncic typically prefers, but he’s a good shooter, solid defender and is far better than any big the Lakers currently employ... The idea of playing alongside LeBron and Luka and being the missing piece that helps bring a title back to Los Angeles might be alluring enough for Brooks to consider a second stint as a Laker."
Lopez is a rare archetype of big man who can block shots and shoot threes. He is also an NBA champion, having won with the Bucks alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2021.
While Lopez may not be the player he was a few seasons ago, he could make sense for LA if he departs from Milwaukee in free agency.
