Name, image and likeness deals have allowed some college student-athletes to make seven figures before joining the professional ranks.
That market is especially lucrative for college football quarterbacks, as at least two dozen starters across the Football Bowl Subdivision's 136 programs are set to make $1 million or more in NIL earnings during the 2025 season.
Among those players is Penn State signal caller Drew Allar, who passed on an opportunity to declare for the NFL Draft to spend another year with the Nittany Lions.
How much money will Allar make?
Sources told On3's Pete Nakos that Allar is estimated to make at least $3 million in NIL earnings this season. That places him in the top five amongst all college quarterbacks, behind (or in the same balpark as) Duke's Darian Mensah ($4 million), Miami's Carson Beck ($3 million to $3.2 million), Nebraska's Dylan Raiola (more than $3 million) and Michigan's Bryce Underwood ($3 million).
Other Big Ten quarterbacks expected to earn at least $1 million in 2025 include Ohio State's Julian Sayin ($1.5 million), UCLA's Nico Iamaleava (in the $1.2 million range) and Illinois' Luke Altmyer (more than $1 million).
Allar is set to lead a Nittany Lions squad that was ranked second in the Associated Press' preseason college football poll — just five points behind No. 1 Texas. Penn State returns many of its players from a team that reached the College Football Playoff semifinals in January, and its roster has been bolstered further by additions from the transfer portal.
The Nittany Lions' season debut will take place on Aug. 30, when they face Nevada at Beaver Stadium. The game will air on CBS at 3:30 p.m. ET.
