Patriots vs. Dolphins inactives: Training camp standout Efton Chism remains an afterthought

The New England Patriots offense struggled during last week’s season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, but they did not make any changes to the group entering Week 2. The same three players were ruled out again versus the Miami Dolphins, among them wide receiver and training camp standout Efton Chism.

An undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington, Chism was one of the big surprises this summer. A consistent performer with the second team, who also earned some snaps with quarterback Drake Maye and the starters, he finished preseason atop the team’s leaderboard in catches (12), receiving yards (121) and receiving touchdowns (2). In turn, he found his way onto the 53-man roster.

However, two weeks into the season he remains an afterthought on offense. The rest of the Patriots’ inactives, meanwhile, look as follows:

  • QB Tommy DeVito
  • WR Efton Chism III
  • OL Caedan Wallace
  • DT Eric Gregory
  • ED Keion White
  • CB Christian Gonzalez

The Patriots entered the weekend with two players already ruled out. Christian Gonzalez remains absent from practice due to the hamstring injury he sustained in late July, while Keion White popped up on the injury report this week due to an illness.

The other inactives are all healthy scratches. The aforementioned Efton Chism did not carry any injury label, and neither did third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito, backup offensive lineman Caedan Wallace and defensive tackle Eric Gregory.

In turn, the Patriots’ two questionable players — right tackle Morgan Moses and linebacker/special teamer Marte Mapu — have both been cleared for action.

  • QB Quinn Ewers
  • RB Jaylen Wright
  • WR Tahj Washington
  • TE Darren Waller
  • DT Benito Jones
  • CB Storm Duck
  • CB Ethan Bonner

The most notable names among the Dolphins’ inactives are not listed above. After already placing starting right guard James Daniels on injured reserve earlier this week, the team also sent right tackle Austin Jackson to IR on Saturday. As a consequence, the team will have an all-new lineup protecting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s blindside on Sunday.

Kickoff between the Patriots and Dolphins at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium is set for 1 p.m. ET.
