Just a little over a week before the Oregon State football team takes to the field against the Cal Bears to kick off the 2025 campaign, the Beavers added a little more specialist depth to their roster in JUCO kicker Cameron Smith.
He’ll join a crop of kickers that features Caleb Ojeda, Logan McCreery, and Tetsuta Tsuyumine this season.
Oregon State special teams coordinator Jamie Christian was certainly looking to get more kicker depth on the roster this season, and the timing of the move is interesting, considering Ojeda looked pretty consistent as the lead kicker in camp. Additionally, McCreery had re-joined the mix, and as we last saw, the Beavers were only down Tsuyumine at kicker as he was dealing with an injury.
Nevertheless, the move adds additional depth to the Beavers’ kicking room, and we’ll have to see where he ultimatley settles into the mix, joining the program with camp already wrapped up.
The 6-foot, 160-pounder is coming off a freshman season with American River College, where he went 7-for-10 in overall field goals, with a long of 47. He was 29 of 31 on extra point attempts, having one blocked.
A member of the class of 2024, Smith played high school ball at Del Oro High School in Loomis (CA), just east of the Bay Area. He had offers from Lewis and Clark and Linfield before electing to take the JUCO route, which ultimatley now leads him to Corvallis.
Over his two years playing varsity, Smith went 3-of-5 on field goals, with a long of 35, and went 60 of 67 on PAT attempts. He also served as their kickoff specialist, with 107 kickoffs averaging 57.5 yards per kick and having a long of 75, with 53 touchbacks.
