OL can't stomach defeat against Rennes and slams Habib Bèye

The Lyon club lashes out at the Rennes staff's behavior after their first loss of the season

Stade Rennais 3-1 Lyon / Ligue 1

Olympique Lyonnais suffered a 3-1 defeat to Stade Rennais this Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Roazhon Park in the fourth round of Ligue 1. After the match, Jorge Maciel called out the attitude of Habib Bèye and the Breton bench.

Olympique Lyonnais did not take their loss in Brittany well. Reduced to ten men after Tyler Morton was sent off in the 75th minute, the Rhône side conceded three late goals, including a brace from young Kader Meïté. But beyond the sporting setback, it was the atmosphere on the touchline that truly riled up the Lyon staff.

Jorge Maciel slams the Rennes bench

Paulo Fonseca's assistant, who was serving the final match of his suspension in the stands, didn't mince his words during the post-match press conference. The Portuguese coach directly accused the Rennes manager of lacking sportsmanship in the way he celebrated his team's goals.

"You have to know how to lose, but above all you have to know how to win. He celebrates every goal right in front of us and at the end, he threatens us. Even one of the assistant coaches tried to greet us just to provoke. I think that around the pitch, there are a lot of people who should help the referee stay focused on the game, and as football professionals, we must respect each other. You have to know how to win," said Jorge Maciel.

Questioned in the press conference, Habib Bèye fired back without hesitation. The match unfolded in a heated atmosphere. OL had struck first through Corentin Tolisso in the 14th minute before losing their grip in the second half. Rennes equalized from a corner in the 80th minute and then took the lead in stoppage time thanks to Meïté, who completed a rapid-fire brace.

"He can say that, I know exactly what happened. Sometimes you have to tell the truth about what happens on a bench, what a coach hears and sees as well. I don't want to respond—if he thinks I lacked humility, that's his opinion, it won't change my life and I'll sleep well tonight. It's not important," replied the Rennes coach.
