Popular podcaster and Kaya 959 breakfast show host Sol Phenduka has been suspended from the station with immediate effect on Wednesday, 20 August.

In a shock announcement, Kaya 959 cited an ongoing internal process.

The station released the bombshell statement just hours after the podcaster had completed his regular on-air shift, leaving listeners and industry insiders stunned by the sudden development.

“Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. This step has been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently under way,” the station’s official statement read.

The radio station emphasised its commitment to proper procedures: “The station is committed to following due process, and no further details will be shared at this stage. Updates will be provided once the internal process has been concluded and a final decision has been reached.”

Sol joined Kaya 959 in 2022 alongside seasoned radio veteran Dineo Ranaka, with the dynamic duo taking over the coveted breakfast show slot from popular hosts Thomas Msengana and Skhumba Hlophe. The pairing was seen as a fresh injection of energy into the station’s morning lineup.

The suspension comes as a particular shock given Sol’s confidence about balancing his various media commitments. Speaking to DRUM magazine previously, the former Big Brother Mzansi contestant and Podcast and Chill co-host had dismissed concerns about potential conflicts between his podcast and radio responsibilities.

“I have been on the radio before and have lots of experience in the medium, and I believe there is still enough freedom for my personality to shine. I’ll be myself,” he confidently stated.

Kaya 959 has requested patience from all stakeholders during this period.
