My hairdresser recommended this $10 frizz tamer, and I want to leave her in my will

I've been at a loss for how to maintain my hair for most of my adult life. Up until recently, my "routine" consisted of shampooing, conditioning, maybe working in a bit of leave-in conditioner (when I remember) and drying. That probably explains why I spent way too long walking around with a head full of frizz (I also dye my hair, which makes for particularly fried strands). Then, about two years ago, I found myself in the chair of a new hairstylist when my go-to tress-trimmer wasn't available. She saw how damaged my hair was and recommended Evo Happy Campers Wearable Treatment to smooth things out.

I'm not one for time-consuming hair masks, but she reassured me that all I had to do was apply it to my damp hair and go about my day. I was also intrigued by its claim to help minimize frizz while protecting strands from heat and UV damage. (Yep, you guessed it — I also blow-dry on the regular. Healthy combination of hair habits right there!)

Behold: the smoothing serum my thirsty hair has been craving. It contains panthenol for a bit of shine, as well as hydrolyzed quinoa to help strengthen and enhance color. Plus, it's vegan and gluten-free.

Pros

  • Lightweight and non-greasy
  • Leaves hair feeling softer and less frizzy
  • Offers UV protection

Cons

  • A bit pricey at $10 for 50 milliliters
  • Smoky scent might be too strong for some

I've always had fine hair, but it has started getting curlier over the past five years. As a ringlet novice, I quickly learned that when I tried to brush my hair while it was dry, it would result in what I refer to as "pomeranian hair," or one big ball of fluff. Because my locks are so fine, they also get tangled at the drop of a hat, which requires me to brush out the knots. Curly hair is a catch-22, I tell ya.

I was most hoping Evo Happy Camper would a) deliver moisture to keep my hair from looking and feeling parched, b) reduce frizz and c) cut down on tangles. That's a pretty tall order for one product, let alone a $10 product. The first time I tried it, I showered per usual, pumped a bit into my hand and ran it through my still-wet hair, concentrating at the dry ends and working my way up.

The first thing I noticed was its scent: smoky-sweet notes similar to caramel just before it's about to burn. Another pleasant surprise was how light it felt; as I rubbed it into my hair, it didn't add weight or greasiness, something that's turned me off from other treatments in the past.

Of course, the real test would come once my hair was dry. Would it retain its straw-like texture, or feel smoother and less knotted? I got out my blow dryer and went to work. Typically, my hair feels very brittle after I use heat, but I was impressed by how soft it was once I finished drying it; plus, the frizz was noticeably reduced.

I've seen more drastic improvement with continued use, and two years later, I consider it a staple in my bathroom cabinet; I'll never apply heat without it. It adds zero time to my routine but makes such a difference — and in my humble opinion, that's the best kind of hair product.

Amazon reviews are also overwhelmingly positive:

"Perfect for fine hair," raved a fellow fan. "I use this after shampooing and conditioning ... I let it air-dry and it looks great! Love the smell; it's like being outside by a campfire, minus the smoke and being outside."

"I love all things Evo," lauded a brand loyalist. "This is a great product and smells amazing. It’s a heat protectant, and it keeps my hair strong and moisturized."

"I love using this product when I’m on vacation, before or after the beach or pool," shared a smitten sightseer. "I’ll use this on my hair, and it just stays [and] looks healthy!"

"Love, love, love this product on my fine-textured curly hair!" exclaimed an eco-conscious enthusiast, who did have one note: "I really wish it didn't come in single-use plastic; I can reuse the spray bottles, I know, but can only reuse so many, and there will always be more made ... I would love to see an option in an aluminum bottle and refills sent in composting or likewise bags!"

Even though I (and several others) love the toasty scent, it's polarizing: "I didn’t expect this product to also smell like a campfire," wrote a sensitive sniffer. "Couldn’t get past the smell to see how the product worked; ended up washing my hair again after applying."

I buy the 50-milliliter travel-size bottle to take on trips, and since a little goes a long way, it lasts forever (there's also a 200-mL bottle that's a better value, if you decide you like it enough to commit).

Here's another must-have for tangle-prone locks:

Oh how I wish I'd had this brush when I was a wee child with a rat's nest. It's the most gentle tangle remover I've ever used, and even when I brush while my hair is wet, I don't notice much breakage. If it's not already on your radar, do your scalp a favor and add it to your cart.
