Mavericks assistant coach God Shammgod has agreed to join the Magic staff as an assistant coach under Jamahl Mosley, a league source told the Orlando Sentinel on Wednesday night.
Shammgod has worked for the Mavericks since 2016 as a player development coach while serving as the head of player culture.
A deal to head to Orlando is being finalized, the league source said. ESPN first reported the move.
Shammgod was widely considered a pivotal part of Jason Kidd’s coaching staff in Dallas, where Mosley worked as an assistant for seven years (2014-2021) under past coach Rick Carlisle.
Shammgod took to social media late Wednesday to thank Dallas and confirm the move to Orlando.
“I had nine amazing years with the Dallas Mavs [and] thought I would be here forever,” he wrote on Instagram. “I want to thank all the coaches and players I got to work with for those years. I want to thank the fans and the people of Dallas for embracing a guy from New York and making me feel at home.
“For [the] Orlando Magic, thank you for this opportunity to grow in my career and help go to the next level,” he added. “Coach Mosley and all of the coaching staff and organization, thank you for believing in me.”
The addition of Shammgod comes after Mosley said at Magic exit interviews in early May he would leave “no stone unturned when it comes to trying to find ways to continue to get better — not just as players, but as coaches as well.”
Shammgod is expected to join the current Orlando coaching staff rather than replace a coach, the league source said.
The addition was expected. NBA reporter Marc Stein noted last Friday the Magic were making a strong push to hire Shammgod away from the Mavericks, and his contract with Dallas ended Monday.
Despite the buzz surrounding the potential hire, Mosley wouldn’t reveal his cards late last week. But he did confirm to the Sentinel changes were coming to his staff.
“We’ll make a few movements here,” Mosley said at the time. “I tell this to each person that asks: The front office said that we’re going to get better, so they brought in players to make us better.
“As coaches, we have to continue to evaluate who we are and what we’re doing, and I’m just trying to find ways to continue to make us better, to improve to help these players be put in the best position possible.”
Improving and developing players is what Shammgod was known for in Dallas. He built a strong relationship with Mavs star Kyrie Irving.
In his role, Shammgod helped Maverick players develop their ball handling skills through various on-court drills.
Prior to joining Dallas, Shammgod served as a player development coach at Providence from 2012-15. He was drafted 45th overall in 1997 out of the Big East school.
A native of New York City, Shammgod averaged 10.3 points, 6.6 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals during 32.5 minutes per game in his two seasons at Providence.
Although he only played 20 games in the NBA with the Wizards, he spent most of 12-year pro career overseas, making stops in China, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait before returning to the United States to coach.
He grew famous for developing a unique basketball move named after him — the “Shammgod,” a special crossover that involves a quick, fake dribble to create space to shoot.
