De Telegraaf are reporting that Marc Overmars is looking to bring former Ajax striker Lassina Traore to Antwerp. The Burkina Faso forward is currently playing in Ukraine for Shakhtar Donetsk, where he has struggled with injuries which has hampered him from living up to his price tag. Overmars was responsible for bringing the striker to Ajax from Ajax Cape Town back in 2018. The Dutch news outlet is reporting that Traore is open to the move, and with only one year left on his contract his current side may be willing to enter into negotiations for the strikers departure. Antwerp have offered just €2.5m, which has so far not been accepted.
It is unsurprising that Shakthar rejected this offer given that they spent €10m on bringing the player to Ukraine from Ajax. During his first season with the club he scored nine goals in 14 games, but injuries have hampered him and he has struggled to reach those heights since. Last season he played 31 games, scoring five goals and grabbing two assists. When Traore left Ajax as a youngster he had fired in 12 goals in 31 games.
With Burkina Faso qualified for AFCON at the end of the year, Traore will want to hit form prior to the tournament. A move to Antwerp and a fresh start may well help him rediscover his form.
