Managers West Ham can appoint if Graham Potter is sacked after Tottenham humiliation

The latest London derby defeat means the Hammers have now lost three of their opening four league matches in 2025-26.

Manager Graham Potter is under massive pressure and could find himself out of a job if results don’t improve soon.

Below we look at the some of the top candidates West Ham chairman David Sullivan could turn to if he decides to pull the plug on the English boss.

Sean Dyche

West Ham ended their association with David Moyes at the end of the 2023-24 season because of their desire to play more progressive football. But the move has proved to be a big failure, with Julen Lopetegui and Potter failing to deliver results at the Hammers.

If the Irons’ board are fearful of relegation, then they could turn to Sean Dyche. The 54-year-old secured Everton’s top-flight status, but his style of play undermined his standing with the supporters, resulting in his dismissal in January.

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho boasts an impressive CV, with three Premier League and two Champions League trophies to his name. The Portuguese has already managed three English top-flight clubs – Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Mourinho enjoyed great success during his two managerial stints at Chelsea, but the same cannot be said about his spells at United and Spurs. The 62-year-old was sacked by Fenerbahce last month following the Turkish club’s Champions League play-off defeat to Benfica.

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard did a commendable job during his tenure at Chelsea, leading them to fourth in the Premier League and the FA Cup final in his debut campaign. But he was dismissed in January 2021 after a series of poor results.

Lampard’s next job at Everton was not a roaring success, although he did save them from being relegated in 2021-22. He is currently in charge of Coventry City who have made an unbeaten start to the new season under him. West Ham could consider Lampard if they axe Potter.

Thiago Motta

Thiago Motta enjoyed a hugely impressive spell at Bologna, creating a reputation as one of Europe’s most interesting and innovative young coaches. His progressive style of play transformed the Serie A club’s fortunes, turning them from relegation strugglers to European contenders.

However, Motta failed to make the same impact at Juventus after taking over the club in June 2024, as the 43-year-old lasted just nine months in his role in Turin. The former Italy international has never worked in England, but his style of football could be a success at West Ham.
