Liam Delap to play at Club World Cup for Chelsea after England omission

Liam Delap is set to join up with Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup after being left out of England’s squad for the u-21 European Championship.

Delap was named in Lee Carsley’s provisional squad for the tournament but was not included in the final 23-player travelling squad.

His omission comes after Chelsea completed the signing of the striker in a £30m deal from Ipswich Town. Chelsea want Delap to join them at the Club World Cup and that decision has now been finalised.

Delap to debut for Chelsea at FIFA Club World Cup

The 22-year-old could make his debut for the West Londoners when their tournament kicks off against Los Angeles FC on June 16th. Enzo Maresca’s side also face Flamengo and El Tunis in the group stage.

Delap scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season despite Ipswich’s relegation from the top division. He arrives at Chelsea to provide competition for Nicolas Jackson at centre-forward.

Maresca previously worked with Delap in the Manchester City academy and was keen to reunite with the player at Stamford Bridge. Delap has taken the number nine shirt at Chelsea ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Chelsea goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe has been called up by Lee Carsley and England for the u-21 European Championship.

The 22-year-old earned his first cap for the Young Lions in March. Sharman-Lowe impressed as Doncaster Rovers won the League Two title in 2024/25.

Holders England begin their defence of the trophy against the Czech Republic on June 12th.
