Kamala Harris scheduled to deliver 2024 campaign 'closing argument' at National Mall

Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a "closing argument" for why she believes she should be voters' choice in the 2024 election on the National Mall next Tuesday, according to a senior campaign official.

Harris, a former prosecutor, will make the case for the country to turn the page away from former President Donald Trump at the Ellipse, which is the same place he delivered a fiery speech nearly four years ago before a crowd of his supporters stormed the Capital on Jan. 6, 2021.

The VP is using the symbolic venue to make a call for voters to end Trump’s "era of chaos and division," and talk about a new path, the Harris campaign official said.

Harris is spending significant time in battleground states. But by returning to the site where her Republican rival refused to accept the 2020 election result, Harris’ final message is set up to be a broader appeal to voters.

Unlike President Joe Biden, who regularly said his predecessor's return to power poses a threat to democracy, Harris had mostly backed off those pronunciations until recently.

But in the final stretch she has accused Trump of wanting "unchecked power." On Wednesday, for example, she seized on remarks by former White House chief of staff John Kelly, who alleged Trump would rule like a dictator in a second term and recounted past admiring statements about Adolf Hitler.

"This is a window into who Donald Trump really is from the people who know him best, from the people who worked with him, side by side, in the Oval Office and in the Situation Room," Harris said.

The Trump campaign has denied Kelly's accounts as "debunked stories" and said he has "beclowned" himself in statements to the press.
