Iran admits security failures in war against Israel

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has admitted for the first time that his country had security failures in the war against Israel.

"The security shortcomings that became apparent during the war must be analysed and remedied," Pezeshkian said at a Cabinet meeting in Tehran, the daily newspaper Iran reported on Thursday.

Self-criticism of this kind is extremely rare in authoritarian Iran.

During the 12-day war against Israel, several high-ranking Iranian military commanders were killed in their private residences. In addition to military and nuclear facilities, relatively unknown targets were also attacked, including a Holocaust-denying foundation in the capital Tehran.

Experts believe such attacks would not have been possible without insider information.

Speculation has been circulating for several weeks about extensive cooperation between some elements of Iranian security aparatus and the Israeli foreign intelligence service Mossad.

In the same context, several people have already been arrested for allegedly spying for Mossad.
