Pakistan has attacked several military installations with missiles and drones in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, the Indian government said on Thursday.
A military station near the border in the Indian state of Punjab was also targeted in the airstrikes, according to the Integrated Defence Staff headquarters responsible for coordination among the Indian army's branches, which posted the information on Platform X.
The threat had been "neutralized," it said. There were no reported casualties. It was initially unclear whether the attacks were continuing. There was no confirmation of the attacks from Pakistan.
According to Indian media reports, loud explosions in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir late Thursday evening caused panic amongst local people. Air raid sirens were sounded.
The India Today newspaper reported that a drone had hit the airport in the city of Jammu, where an air force facility is located. India said it had activated its air defence system.
"Suspected bombing, shelling or missile strikes," the former police chief of the Union Territory, Shesh Paul Vaid, wrote on X.
India's government had previously stated that it had attacked air defence systems in several locations in Pakistan overnight. Pakistan, for its part, said it had shot down 25 Indian drones.
Tensions between the two nuclear powers have escalated significantly since a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 that left 26 people dead.
New Delhi accuses Pakistan of involvement in the attack. Islamabad rejects this.
