Shopping for clothes isn't just my job; it's one of my favorite hobbies, as well. Anytime the opportunity presents itself to get up close and personal with clothes, count me in, I'm game. There was recently some chatter among the shopping editors here at Yahoo about Reese Witherspoon's Draper James clothing line at Kohl's. Were the pieces as pretty in person as they looked on the website? And what about the quality?
Even though I'm a bona fide Kohl's super fan, I had to admit I didn't know very much about the Draper James styles, except, of course, that they existed. I have several items from the retailer in my closet, but shockingly, not one from Witherspoon's collection. So, off to Kohl's I went to do some "research."
The Draper James line is pretty comprehensive, so for simplicity's sake, I decided to just stick to Draper James dresses for my testing purposes. There were tons to choose from at my local Kohl's store, and as I flipped through to find my sizes, I was really impressed by the quality. The dresses don't look or feel cheap at all. Even better, they deliver once you put them on. Behold — five faves from my fitting room adventure.
Yes, in case you're wondering, this gem has pockets. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)
I'm a stripes girl, so no surprise this seersucker style was my favorite. I'm also a fan of styles that look way more expensive than they really are. This dress is giving "rich mom" and "quiet luxury" vibes, at a very non-rich-mom price. I will note, the sizing on this dress is a bit inconsistent. I tried on the same size in two different colors — one fit perfectly, the other was just a tad too big.
I usually prefer natural materials like linen and cotton for summer because they're breathable, but this rayon-nylon felt surprisingly soft and airy. It helps that the dress has a subtle texture to it, adding to the "more expensive than it is" factor. I will also add that the varying stripes on this dress make it surprisingly flattering; the diagonal lines on the skirt especially work wonders on the lower half.
I'm only 5'4", but the cut of this maxi makes me look taller and leaner... always a good thing in my book. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)
What’s not to love about a dress that feels like it was made for summering in Nantucket? With its floaty shape and timeless floral print, it's romantic, polished and just preppy enough — whether you're headed to an alumni lawn party or just want to channel your inner Nancy Meyer movie lead. Swap in sandals or slingbacks for some serious country club chic.
Several shoppers who left reviews for this style have remarked about its quality, and I have to agree. It looks and feels like a much more expensive design.
"I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this dress for the price," one fan wrote in their review. "Great fabric and the skirt was lined. It was delivered in a mailing bag that was crammed in my mailbox. However, it had minimal wrinkling. A quick touch-up with an iron and was able to wear it to work meeting the next day. Received lots of compliments. I'm 5'4 and the length was perfect for me."
The vibrant red color and the lightweight, silky texture make this dress a winner in my book. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)
Growing up, my mom never let me wear the color red because she said it was "too mature." Now that I'm an adult? I wear red as much as I want! This floral print frock immediately caught my eye on the rack. The cut is flattering, the print is bold and the swingy style practically begs to be invited to a garden party.
I loved everything about the midi dress, from the color to the feminine silhouette to the cinched waistline. My only, teeny tiny complaint? The neckline is a bit low. I'm not blessed in the boob department, so it's not really an issue for me, but more well-endowed ladies might feel more comfortable pinning the neckline or wearing a camisole underneath.
Serving Trader Joe's chic — and I'm into it. Not your thing? There's an orange-and-pink version that's a bit more Gauguin-in-Tahiti, but in the same flattering cut. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)
I really did not expect to like this Hawaiian-inspired dress as much as I did. Between the print, the ruffles, the smocking and the tiered hem, there's a lot going on, but somehow, it all works.
Unfortunately, the blue and yellow version that I tried on is no longer available on the Kohl's website. That said, this pink and orange version is arguably more flattering on different skin tones and reads more summer-y, less South Pacific.
You can't tell from the photo, but this floral number is fun and swingy. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)
Full, puffy sleeves normally give me pause, but these were actually quite flattering and a nice touch for anyone who feels self-conscious about their upper arms.
One thing I will say about all the Draper James dresses I tried on — the colors are a feast for the eyes! The green floral print number is no exception, plus the contrasting trim really makes it pop. The length of this dress is perfection: It hits right below the knee so I can show some leg without worrying about a full moon situation.
