I am my mother's daughter in more ways than one. We love to shop (and one of us makes a living doing it). We fill our homes with fresh flowers (as evidenced here). We can't pass up a sweet treat. We would rather spend on experiences than stuff (although sometimes we do the latter). Perhaps, the way I am most like her is that I also get a thrill out of finding and giving the perfect gift — and this time of year, my mom's the lucky recipient.
The key to giving the best Mother's Day gift (and, well, life)? Listen to your mom. If she spells out exactly what she wants, then do as she says and don't take any liberties. But if she left you high and dry this Mother's Day, then let her hobbies and passions guide you, or think about little things that would simplify her day to day. Maybe you splash out on a self-heating mug, so she doesn't need to microwave her coffee a zillion times a day. Or maybe it's a gardening-related gift that she can put to work this summer.
As for me, I tend to give my mom a Mother's Day gift that elevates her every day. Some years, I go for something purely practical, whether it's a buzzy kitchen tool or top-rated travel gear. Other times, I spring for a small luxury that my mom wouldn't necessarily buy for herself, including a pair of ultra-soft PJs. I've rounded up some of my best work from past years down below.
In the spirit of giving, let me go ahead and point you to the rest of our Mother's Day gift guides. We've got a guide dedicated to under-$50 finds, a roundup of memorable gift experiences and more mom-approved picks.
My mom deserves all the flowers — literally and figuratively speaking. And while sending a bouquet may seem pretty lazy for someone who writes gift guides for a living, who can blame me for giving my mom the thing she loves most (besides me and my brothers, of course)? She normally picks up a bunch of stems during her weekly trips to the grocery store, so I figured I'd give her three bigger arrangements spread out over three months.
A lot of online flower delivery services have monthly subscription models, but BloomsyBox is superior (and I've tested a bunch of 'em!). They only ship seasonal blooms from eco-friendly, fair-trade farms, so the variety, quality and freshness is top-notch. There are three sizes to choose from — I went with Deluxe, the middle-of-the-road option with approximately 24 stunning stems. The three-month option fit my budget ($210 total), but you can also take it month-by-month, or pay for six or twelve months upfront.
My mom didn't know what she was going to get until it made it to her doorstep — and that's all part of BloomsyBox's guarantee that "each order will be unique and different, each time." I loved following along with monthly photo reveals, making it a gift for me, too.
Moms are the ultimate multitaskers, so let's just say that this Mother's Day gift was a bit symbolic. Oprah called this 10-in-1 pan the "kitchen magician," and my mom couldn't agree more. She uses it to scramble eggs, steam veggies (with the included steamer basket) and sear meat, but it's also heat safe up to 450°F so she can pop it in the oven to get chicken nice and crispy. It even has a built-in spatula rest, so she doesn't have to dirty up her countertops. Her favorite feature? The nonstick coating, which makes it incredibly easy to clean.
My parents put a lot of time and care into a kitchen renovation a few years back, so she's (understandably) very particular about what she leaves out in the open. It's no surprise that this beauty makes the cut.
My parents are always going somewhere, so they've got all the travel gadgets and gizmos they could ever need. But on a recent family trip, I noticed that my mom's carry-on bag wasn't exactly made for travel (especially given how much she's jet-setting). I've heard nothing but good things about this Calpak duffel, so I figured I'd level up my mom's carry-on.
She's taken it on every trip since — weekend getaways, longer stays and everything in between — and won't stop singing its praises. It's lightweight enough to lug through the airport, but the trolley sleeve is a nice bonus if she's schlepping a suitcase, too. There are a whopping nine pockets, including a secret stowaway for shoes, a designated water bottle holder and zippered exterior pockets for items that she wants within reach.
Don't want to take my mom's word for it? There are nearly 5,000 five-star reviews on the Calpak site that speak for themselves. "This bag makes my carry-on-only life possible," one frequent flyer raved. "I can’t believe how much it holds and it keeps things so organized. I have used it on multiple international airlines and fits under the seat."
One mom pointed out that it's not just great for travel. "I use my Luka duffel as a bag for my breast pump supplies when I go to work. It should seriously be marketed for this! All of the pockets are so great for storing different parts and snacks, and the shoe pocket is great for the pump itself. The material is awesome because it's so easy to clean."
My mom and I love nothing major than cozying up in a nice PJ set. I've tried all the biggest, buzziest brands as part of my job, and Lake makes some of the softest, snuggliest pajamas out there. Last year, I treated my mom to this striped style and they're now the most coveted pair in her collection. In fact, the last time I was home, she made sure to save her favorite jammies for our movie night ... which was fitting since I only packed my Lake sets.
So, what makes these particular PJs so special? Well, Lake's most popular pairs are made with 100% Pima cotton, which is sometimes called the "cashmere of cotton" because it's smooth, silky and downright luxurious. The styles skew more classic, which is right up my mom's alley. I went with blue-and-white stripe, but it comes in ditsy florals, toile and more striped variations. I was torn between which pair to get, but ultimately this wide-leg style won out. She's on the shorter side (like mother, like daughter), so the cropped pant is perfect for her petite frame. Plus, Lake warns that Pima cotton often shrinks in length during its first wash, which was an added bonus in my mom's case!
I know, I know, these pajamas are on the pricey side, but take it from one stylish shopper who called them "the most comfortable PJs I've ever worn." My mom echoed that very sentiment, which is why they're worth every penny in my book.
