After falling to the Washington Mystics in their 2025 WNBA season opener, Brittney Griner still eyed her first regular-season win with the Atlanta Dream.
On Tuesday, Griner and the Dream traveled to Gainbridge Fieldhouse (Indianapolis, IN) to take on Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.
Coming into the game, Griner, who left the Phoenix Mercury over the offseason, had tallied 2,330 rebounds during her 12-year WNBA career, good for the 21st-most in league history. She trailed former Sacramento Monarchs forward Tangela Smith (2,335) for 20th.
With 6:58 remaining in the third quarter against Indiana, Griner grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer from Alisha Gray, marking her sixth of the game and the 2,336th of her career.
In doing so, Griner has now passed Smith and moved into the top 20 in the WNBA's all-time rebounding list.
She now trails Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who replaced Griner in the offseason, for 19th on the all-time list. Ahead of her at 17th are former Seattle Storm forward Lauren Jackson and ex-Sacramento Monarchs center Yolanda Griffith, who each recorded 2,444 career rebounds.
The Dream public relations revealed the historic news with a post on social media.
"With her 6th rebound of the night, Brittney Griner climbs into the top 20 in WNBA history for total rebounds. BG passes Tangela Smith (2,335) to take sole possession of 20th all-time," Atlanta Dream PR wrote on X.
Griner has been one of the best players in the WNBA since joining the league in 2013. The 6-foot-9 center, along with now-retired guard Diana Taurasi, led the Mercury to a championship win in 2014. For her career, Griner is averaging 17.7 points on 56.1% shooting and 7.4 rebounds per game (prior to Tuesday night).
Following Tuesday's game, Griner and the Dream will return to Atlanta on Thursday to face the Fever once again.
