Just as the Chicago Bears chose to lose in head-scratching fashion, so too did the Chicago White Sox.
The Guardians completed the sweep, keeping their wild card hopes alive, thanks to a great defensive play to end the game that is sure to be on all the highlight reels for the day. And it seems as if the Naylor curse lives on, no matter what the first name is.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, as Yoendrys Gómez and Slade Cecconi started off throwing three no-hit innings each, before Kyle Teel cancelled the postgame show to start the top of the fourth. With two outs, Miguel Vargas doubled to center for the 1-0 lead:
Steven Kwan started the bottom of the fourth with the dreaded leadoff walk, José Ramírez had a one-out single, and the Guards were suddenly in business. Sure enough with two outs, Bo Naylor doubled in two runs to take the lead. If you thought just because Sox-killer Josh Naylor was traded out of the American League the White Sox were off the hook, don’t worry: He passed the torch to his brother.
The South Siders came right back in the top of the fifth to tie it up on a solo shot to left from Chase Meidroth, his fifth of the year.
From there, the game stayed tied until the seventh. If we want some highlights in between, here’s a nice pickoff at second base from Brandon Eisert on the mound!
Gómez ended up having a solid game on the mound in his five innings of work, with two hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts to bring his ERA down to 4.91.
Remember how I talked about Josh Naylor passing the torch to Bo? You’ll never believe what happened next.
Yes, that was a go-ahead solo shot by Naylor, to break the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. The ball seemed to just keep on sailing, as it just cleared the fence in right field.
From there, it came down to the White Sox offense, which has struggled overall in the series, to deliver a tying run in the top of the ninth inning.
They came oh so close … after a wild series of events.
With one out, Lenyn Sosa singled. After a Colson Montgomery strikeout and the White Sox down to their last chance, Miguel Vargas had a bloop single out to Jhonkensy Noel in right field. Big Christmas was unable to track the ball down fast enough, putting runners on first and third with Andrew Benintendi up and one last chance. Benintendi hit what looked to be a single up the middle to tie, but second baseman Brayan Rocchio said not too fast, as he made a magnificent play to grab the last out at first, and end the game instead. It’s at least the second phenomenal and game-saving play Rocchio has made against the White Sox in 2025:
Grabbing the ball all the way in the outfield grass was how the game and the series ended.
The team will return home for a series against the Baltimore Orioles starting tomorrow. Both teams had slow starts to the season, but have played better as of late. It will be Kyle Bradish against… TBD. Game time is at 6:40 p.m. CT, and we will be back with your coverage tomorrow night.
