The transfer window may still be some way off, but the debate over Liverpool’s potential forward reinforcements is already heating up. In the latest episode of Daily Red for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Grizz Khan tackled the pressing question: should Liverpool target Julián Álvarez or Alexander Isak?
Isak’s Physicality or Álvarez’s Versatility?
Grizz Khan was unequivocal in his admiration for Alexander Isak, praising his ability to trouble defenders. “He’s the in-form striker, one of the in-form strikers in the whole of Europe,” Grizz remarked. “Fantastic attributes—skill, speed, agility, intelligence… possibly in the top three strikers in the world right now.”
It’s no surprise that Isak remains high on Liverpool’s radar. The Newcastle forward has been a menace for the Reds, and Grizz didn’t shy away from reminding listeners about his past performances against Liverpool: “He’s got a good record against us, he says he likes playing against us… We need to stop him from saying that.”
However, Julián Álvarez presents a different proposition. Dave Davis highlighted the Argentine’s relentless work rate and technical ability, saying, “Alvarez is your man if you want pace, hard work, tenacity, finishing, great striking ability, and movement.” Álvarez’s performances for Manchester City, particularly in high-profile games, have drawn admiration, with Grizz describing him as “an absolute pest for Real Madrid.”
Sesko in the Mix?
While Álvarez and Isak dominate the headlines, another name continues to surface: Benjamin Šeško. The RB Leipzig forward has a release clause, which, as Grizz put it, is something Liverpool “like.”
However, he admitted Šeško might not be the finished article: “I don’t want to scare anyone off, but he has a lot of Darwin Núñez-type attributes.” The comparison might be unsettling for those hoping Liverpool moves towards a more clinical finisher, but Grizz was quick to add: “I feel as though he’s a far better finisher than Núñez—left foot, right foot, a powerful, clean striker of the ball.”

With Liverpool’s focus on a more physical, clinical forward to complement their existing options, Šeško could be a wildcard if deals for Isak or Álvarez don’t materialise.
Transfer Strategy: How Many Will Arrive?
One of the most intriguing takeaways from the podcast was the discussion around Liverpool’s summer transfer strategy. Grizz made a bold claim about the club’s intentions: “I think we will make a massive splash in the market this summer… especially in the forward line.”
With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, and even Mohamed Salah, the club is expected to be active in the market. “We know Díaz is very likely to go, Núñez could be sold, and we’re looking at at least two attackers coming in,” Grizz stated.
Dave Davis echoed the sentiment, suggesting that Liverpool might even sign two forwards: “If you can complement Šeško with another one of our first-choice targets—either Isak or Álvarez—then that would make sense.”

What Next for Liverpool?
While both hosts agreed that Liverpool is in the market for a top-class forward, the road ahead is far from straightforward. The financial implications of signing Isak, who could cost upwards of £120m, or prising Álvarez from Manchester City, remain significant hurdles.
However, as Grizz pointed out, Liverpool are serious about strengthening their attack. “All indications point to us making a big move. People doubt it, but I truly believe we’ll spend big on the right target.”
As speculation builds, one thing is clear: Liverpool’s recruitment team, led by Michael Edwards, is working behind the scenes to secure Arne Slot’s ideal forward options. Whether it’s Isak, Álvarez, or another surprise addition, the coming months promise to be eventful for Liverpool’s transfer strategy.
