Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz by telephone on Thursday, in what he described as a "good and detailed conversation."

In a post on X, Zelensky said Merz had pledged continued support for Kiev, adding: "It was important to hear that."

"We count on Germany to continue playing one of the key roles in supporting Ukraine — both in protecting our people now and in rebuilding the country after the war ends," Zelensly wrote.

He said the two leaders had "already agreed to work on implementing many important things," emphasizing that there is "great potential" for partnership between Germany and Ukraine.

Zelensky was one of the first foreign politicians to congratulate Merz on X immediately after his appointment as chancellor on Tuesday.
