German decathlete Till Steinforth has been forced to withdraw from the World Athletics championships in Tokyo after completing only three disciplines.

"After consulting with the coaching team, the medical staff, and my family, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the world championships," explained Steinforth, who is suffering from groin pain.

The 23-year-old had to undergo groin surgery this summer. As a result, he was unable to prepare optimally for the competition.

He said he felt good during the preparation but during the competition, he realized that the "pain was simply too much."

After the 100-meter dash, the long jump, and the shot put, he was in 22nd place with 2,367 points.

While the championships are over for Steinforth, Olympic silver medallist Leo Neugebauer continues to fight for a medal and is second after three events.
