Georgia QB Gunner Stockton to have jersey retired at Rabun County

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has his name littered throughout the Georgia high school football record books thanks to an exquisite prep career at Rabun County. This week, he’ll be honored by his alma mater.

Rabun County football announced on Tuesday morning that Stockton’s No. 14 jersey will be retired this Friday before the Tigers’ homecoming game against Banks County.

Across his four years under center, Stockton accrued 13,652 passing yards and 177 touchdowns through the air, as well as 4,372 rushing yards and 77 scores on the feet. He holds the Georgia state records for each of those stats aside from rushing yards.

As a senior, Stockton was named the Georgia Gatorade Football Player of the Year after leading the Tigers to an 11-2 season that saw them reach the 2A quarterfinals. That season alone witnessed 70 total touchdowns (55 passing, 15 rushing), over 5,000 total yards and just one interception.

Amidst his prep dominance, Stockton became a blue-chip prospect. He finished the 2022 cycle as the No. 149 overall recruit, the No. 9 QB and No. 15 player in Georgia, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies.

Stockton, of course, opted to stay home and signed with UGA. He originally committed to South Carolina, but flipped to the Bulldogs on Jan. 28, 2021. Now a redshirt junior in Athens, Stockton finally has the reins under center and has helped pace Georgia to a 3-0 start this season. In 12 games across three seasons, Stockton has thrown for 1,309 yards and tallied 10 total TDs for the Dawgs.

Rabun County is also undefeated so far this fall. The Tigers improved to 4-0 last week with a 14-3 win over Bremen. Their defense has allowed more than one score just once in the four games. Entering this week, Rabun County is the No. 97 team in the Peach State, per the Massey Ratings. It is heavily favored to defeat 0-4 Banks County this Friday with Stockton in attendance.
