Gamecocks in the WNBA – Week 14

Allisha Gray and A’ja Wilson made history last week, and both added to their MVP cases. Catch up on all the Gamecocks in the WNBA.

Gray has led Atlanta to the second-best record in the league, despite injuries all around her (Rhyne Howard, Jordin Canada, and Brittney Griner have all missed multiple games). Unfortunately, her best friend has probably eliminated Gray’s chance of winning MVP.

Las Vegas is on a seven-game winning streak, the longest in the league, and Wilson has been on fire. Last week, she averaged 27.0 points and 13.3 rebounds and flirted with another 30-point, 20-rebound game. It would have been the second in WNBA history and Wilson’s second in three games.

Atlanta Dream (22-12)
Allisha Gray
34 games (34 starts), 35.4 mpg, 18.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.1 spg
Last week, Gray became the 22nd player in WNBA history to record 4,00 career points and 400 career three-pointers.

Last week:
at Seattle (85-75 win): 39 minutes*, 22 points, 11 rebounds, assist, steal
vs Seattle (in Vancouver) (80-78 loss): 37 minutes*, 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, steal
at Golden State (79-63 win): 32 minutes*, 13 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals

Te-Hina Paopao
33 games (7 starts), 14.6 mpg, 5.5 ppg, 2.0 apg, 1.4 rpg, 42.4 3P%
Paopao has dropped out of the league’s top five in three-point percentage, but just barely: she’s sixth. She continues to make big plays when given a chance and has been an underrated defender.

Last week:
at Seattle (85-75 win): 7 minutes, 2 points, assist, block, 0-1 3PT
vs Seattle (in Vancouver) (80-78 loss): 12 minutes, 5 points, 3 assists, 1-4 3PT
at Golden State (79-63 win): 29 minutes, 10 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, steal, 2-5 3PT

Tuesday, August 19 at Las Vegas (10:00 ET, NBA TV/League Pass)
Thursday, August 21 vs Minnesota (7:30 ET, League Pass)
Saturday, August 23 vs New York (2:00 ET, CBS)

Chicago Sky (8-25)
Kamilla Cardoso
29 games (28 starts), 26.3 mpg, 12.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 2.0 apg, 0.9 bpg, 52.4 FG%
There haven’t been many bright spots for Chicago this season, but Cardoso has proved she can be an impact player in the WNBA.

Last week:
at Connecticut (71-62 loss): 34 minutes*, 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, block
vs Golden State (90-59 loss): 29 minutes*, 14 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists

Upcoming games:
Tuesday, August 19 vs Seattle (8:00 ET, League Pass)
Thursday, August 21 at New York (7:00 ET, Amazon Prime)
Saturday, August 23 vs Connecticut (4:00 ET, CBS Sports Network)

Dallas Wings (9-26)
Tyasha Harris
5 games, 16.5 mpg, 4.6 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 2.6 apg, 45.5 3P%
Harris injured her left knee against Connecticut on May 27. Initially, there was optimism that it wasn’t long-term, but unfortunately, Harris underwent season-ending surgery on June 10.

Golden State Valkyries (18-16)
Laeticia Amihere
22 games, 12.9 mpg, 5.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.2 apg
It didn’t make much sense when Golden State stopped playing Amihere, and when she got another chance against Atlanta, she was productive.

Last week:
vs Connecticut (74-57 win): 2 minutes, 2 rebounds
at Washington (88-83 win): DNP-CD
at Chicago (90-59 win): 3 minutes, no stats
vs Atlanta (79-63 loss): 14 minutes, 7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, assist, steal

Indiana Fever (19-16)
Aliyah Boston
35 games (35 starts), 30.1 mpg, 15.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.1 bpg, 0.9 spg, 53.9 FG%
Injuries have wrecked Indiana, but Boston and Kelsey Mitchell have gamely carried on. It’s hard for a post to play without a point guard, but she is still productive. Boston set Indiana’s single-season record with her 15th double-double, and deserves all-WNBA consideration.

Last week:
vs Dallas (81-80 loss): 31 minutes*, 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, assist
vs Washington (88-84 loss): 27 minutes*, 20 points, 9 rebounds, assist
at Connecticut (99-93 win/OT): 36 minutes*, 14 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals

Upcoming games:
Friday, August 22 vs Minnesota (7:30 ET, Ion/League Pass)
Sunday, August 24 at Minnesota (7:00 ET, CBS Sports Network)

Las Vegas Aces (21-14)
A’ja Wilson
31 games (31 starts), 30.7 mpg, 22.6 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.1 bpg, 1.6 spg
Wilson’s accomplishments this week: moved into ninth place in career blocks (505), set the record for most career 20-point, 5-rebound, 2-steals, 2-block games, and leads the league in 30-point games this season. She also had the league’s viral moment of the week:

Last week:
vs New York (83-77 win): 34 minutes*, 17 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks
at Phoenix (86-83 win): 34 minutes*, 30 points, 16 rebounds, 2 blocks, assist
vs Dallas (106-87 win): 31 minutes*, 34 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals, assist

Upcoming games:
Tuesday, August 19 vs Atlanta (10:00 ET, NBA TV/League Pass)
Thursday, August 21 vs Phoenix (10:00 ET, Amazon Prime)
Saturday, August 23 at Washington (3:00 ET, League Pass)

Los Angeles Sparks (16-18)
Sania Feagin
12 games, 5.1 mpg, 1.2 ppg, 0.7 rpg, 0.5 bpg
Feagin did not play last week.

Last week:
vs New York (105-97 loss): DNP-CD
at Dallas (97-96 win): DNP-CD
at Washington (95-86 loss): DNP-CD

Upcoming games:
Wednesday, August 20 vs Dallas (10:00 ET, League Pass)

Seattle Storm (17-18)
Tiffany Mitchell (First 16 games with Las Vegas)
31 games (3 starts), 13.9 mpg, 3.3 ppg, 1.3 rpg

Slumping Seattle has gone to a seven-and-a-half player rotation. Mitchell is that half player, and hasn’t played 10 or more minutes since August 5, before Seattle traded for Brittney Sykes.

Last week:
vs Atlanta (85-75 loss): 9 minutes, 3 points
vs Atlanta (in Vancouver) (80-78 win): 9 minutes, 1 rebound
vs Phoenix (85-82 loss): 3 minutes, no stats

Upcoming games:
Tuesday, August 19 at Chicago (8:00 ET, League Pass)
Friday, August 22 at Dallas (7:30 ET, Ion/League Pass)
Sunday, August 24 at Washington (3:00 ET, League Pass)

Unsigned
Zia Cooke
24 games, 10.4 mpg, 3.3 ppg, 0.5 apg, 0.5 rpg
On August 5, Cooke was traded from Seattle to Washington. She was subsequently waived by the Mystics.

Bree Hall
2 games, 3.9 mpg, 1.5 ppg, 1.0 rpg
Golden State waived Hall on Monday, June 30, to create roster space for players returning from EuroBasket. It wasn’t a surprise, but hopefully Hall put herself on the league’s radar.
