Mike Vrabel has a type.

He likes smart, physical, tough, versatile players.

Cal safety Craig Woodson, taken in the 4th-round by the Patriots (106 overall) is the latest to fit the mold.

In terms of versatility, he played in the slot as well as both safety spots in college.

Toughness? He likes to fly around and make big hits.

“Hitting people is what I’ve liked to do since I was a kid,” Woodson told reporters Saturday on a Zoom call. “When I first started playing football, like, just running up, hitting somebody, smacking them, just getting them on the ground, that’s everything I’ve loved since I was a kid.

“So just coming into college, and playing physical as well, coming from Texas, as well, we play physical football down in Texas, so bringing that to college at Cal was great.”

Woodson says that’s the best element of football.

“I think that for me, that’s really the thrill of the game,” he said. “I love running and hitting. So I’m going to love bringing that to New England. And I know there’s guys there who are going to be on the same page.”

Starters Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers are also big hitters.

The 6-foot, 200-pounder was a three year starter for the Golden Bears and ran a 4.45 40-yard dash at the Combine.

A fifth-year senior, Woodson had 5 interceptions, 9 tackles for loss, 21 pass breakups, and 245 tackles during his time at Cal.
