Four-star guard Lucas Morillo has been on Virginia’s radar for some time, and his strong play this summer only strengthened that interest.
The City Rocks standout averaged 14.8 points per game on the Nike EYBL Circuit and also gained valuable international experience with the Dominican Republic U19 National Team.
“The summer went really well,” Morillo told CavsCorner. “The entire EYBL and international season went well, and most importantly, I learned a lot because I played a lot of basketball games.”
UVa offered Morillo in June, and the relationship with the Cavaliers’ staff has been steady ever since.
“I have a great relationship with Virginia and all of the coaches there,” he said. “I have been in constant contact with them, and it has been great so far. I am looking forward to continuing to have good communication with them.”
UVa sees a good fit for Morillo
Morillo, currently No. 56 overall prospect in the class of 2026, added that the coaches have been clear about what they see in him as a player.
“They have just been telling me how much they appreciate my game and how I play the game,” he explained. “They appreciate how I play on both ends of the floor, and they continue to tell me how interested they are in me. I know it is an outstanding school and a prestigious school to be at.”
Head coach Ryan Odom has also outlined how Morillo could fit into the program.
“Ryan Odom just keeps on telling me how he likes the type of big guard that I am,” Morilla said. “He thinks I would fit very well in their system with the type of offense they run. I know Coach Odom runs a fast pace playing style, and that fits me well. I am excited to learn more about how I could potentially fit into their system.”
Track record is a big plus for the Hoos
He believes Odom’s track record will translate well in Charlottesville.
“I know Coach Odom did very well at VCU, and he was just telling me that he wants to bring all of that success to Virginia, and I believe he will because he has built great programs wherever he has been,” the Newman School standout said.
Of course, UVa is not the only high-major school in pursuit of Morillo, and he said that the overall recruitment process is going well for him right now.
“The recruitment process has been going really well so far,” he said. “I am grateful for the position that I am in right now, and I appreciate all of the schools that have reached out. I have only visited Marquette so far.”
Visits and timeline taking shape
“I am talking to Virginia, Illinois, Texas, and a couple of other schools about potentially visiting them,” Morillo added.
As for a commitment timeline, the 6-foot-6 guard said he isn’t rushing things but has a general target in mind.
“I would say that I don’t really have a set date right now, but I am looking to make a decision in the next couple of months near the beginning of the high school season or right before the season starts,” Morillo said.
