Everton Women 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur: WSL Match Report and Reaction

Brian Sorensen felt Everton Women simply weren’t sharp enough as Tottenham Hotspur ran out 2-0 winners at Goodison Park.

Goals from Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg ensured that the Blues’ opening day game at Goodison Park would end in defeat in front of a lively crowd of 6,473.

And while Sorensen conceded his side weren’t good enough today and ultimately undone by mistakes, the Toffees’ head coach is already looking to Friday’s showdown with London City Lionesses as he looks to get his team back on track.

“Unfortunately, individually, we weren’t sharp enough and didn’t take the ball as well as we normally do. And we did it was too late,” he said.

”Collectively, when we were pressing it was also a bit off. The half-time talk was good, we started to get a bit of momentum but then came the mistake and they scored the second goal.

”After that it was hard, as they were sitting in and didn’t want to expose themselves.

“The good thing in football is that there is not so long to the next game so we will regroup throughout the week and make sure we are ready for London City on Friday.”

Sorensen made two changes to the side that defeated Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield last time out as Clare Wheeler and club-record signing Ruby Mace replaced Honoka Hayashi and Hayley Ladd in the middle of the park.

However it was the visitors who settled quicker and managed to register the first game’s first attempt of the afternoon as Drew Spence struck the post inside 11 minutes. Courtney Brosnan was live to it and tipped her effort on to the woodwork.

Everton failed to heed the warnings and found themselves behind on 27 minutes. Ahtinen slotted past Courtney Brosnan from inside the area after a fortunate rebound off Rion Ishikawa landed in the path of Tandberg, who Athinen to finish into the bottom left corner.

The Blues fought back and came close to levelling the scores on the stroke of half-time as both Ornella Vignola and Pacheco saw consecutive shots that seemed destined to hit the back of the net blocked.

With his side behind at the break made two changes at half time, Kelly Gago and Karen Holmgaard replacing Wheeler and Robinson.

Spurs doubled their lead four minutes after the interval as Tandberg lobbed Brosnan from 40-yards out. Bethany England robbed Ishikawa of possession before prodding it to the 21-year-old. She looked up before lofting an audacious effort over the head of the keeper and in to the back of the net.

Again the Toffees fought back, Mace’s arrowed effort almost finding the bottom left corner on 62 minutes. Pacheco’s cross from the left was half-cleared, with it falling to the England international on the edge of the box. She connected well with the ball, Lize Kop denying her in front of the Gwladys.

As 20 minutes remained on the clock, Toni Payne replaced Momiki, with Sorensen deciding to role the dice once more as Mace made way for Hayashi eight minutes later.

Despite the Blues’ efforts and late pushes, Spurs saw the game out, defending resolutely to maintain their clean sheet.

Everton Women have a great chance to right the wrongs of Sunday, with the visit of London City Lionesses on Friday, 19 September.
