As a 52-year-old beauty editor, I'm always on the lookout for fresh ingredients that actually help improve the texture, bounciness and overall dewinesss of my ever-wizening skin. My latest discovery is ectoin (pronounced eck-toe-in), a powerhouse molecule that's been popping up everywhere in skin care circles this year. It's currently one of the buzziest anti-aging ingredients on social media and, according to experts, may be among the most effective too.
Ectoin was first discovered in bacteria that live in harsh environments like deserts and saltwater lakes. It was key to the microorganisms' survival, both stabilizing cells and protecting them from extreme UV radiation and severe dryness. Studies show these protective qualities can actually transfer to human skin: "Ectoin helps maintain moisture in the skin by stabilizing proteins and cell membranes and forming a 'water shell' around cells," says Dr. Mina Amin, a board-certified dermatologist at California Dermatology Specialists. "It also improves skin-barrier function and reduces transepidermal water loss."
What makes ectoin perhaps most appealing to beauty brands is how it naturally works as a multitasker, mimicking the positive effects of multiple popular skin care ingredients at once. Like niacinamide, it soothes skin. Similar to hyaluronic acid, it draws in moisture. By increasing skin bounciness and brightness, ectoin even carries some of the same benefits as vitamin C.
Amin says ectoin can be especially helpful with decreasing skin irritation and inflammation, which is useful for those with conditions like eczema, rosacea and atopic dermatitis. "It can also help shield the skin from UV radiation, pollution, temperature extremes and oxidative stress," she explains. "And ectoin can help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin by reducing oxidative damage, which can therefore help with fine lines and loss of elasticity."
In terms of safety, unlike actives such as vitamin C, it is non-irritating and easily tolerated by even the most temperamental skin. "Ectoin is considered safe, especially for sensitive or reactive skin," says Amin. Though, she cautions, "To be on the safe side, if you're trying a new product with ectoin, it's smart to patch test — especially if you have sensitive skin."
Ready to test out this new skin care star for yourself? Below, I rounded up some of Amin's and my own favorite products containing ectoin.
This concentrated serum has been clinically proven to boost moisture in dehydrated skin, leaving it feeling bouncier and looking fuller in just a few minutes. In addition to ectoin, it contains the super-hydrator hyaluronic acid, which only heightens the dewy effect.
I used it twice a day for a week and saw a noticeable difference in the clarity of my skin tone — by the end of seven days, any remnants of a dull, drab menopausal complexion and dryness were completely gone.
Packed with ectoin and with the addition of calming guaiazulene and centella, this viscous, jelly-like moisturizer is among the best I've tried for dry, post-sun skin. When I applied it after a day at the beach, it had an immediate glowifying effect on my skin, and it also soothes redness and irritation and makes your face look a bit plumper.
But what I may like best about this product is the non-pilling texture; it actually absorbs into your skin without being greasy or sticky. 10/10 recommend.
Long plane rides can be hell on your skin, a situation that's only exacerbated by age. This mist, infused with ectoin, vitamin E and green tea extract, is a bit of a travel-skin miracle. With just a few spritzes, it fully hydrates and alleviates all the itchiness and discomfort of a dry face.
"A product I love that is made with ectoin is the AziMD Skincare Purify Cleanser," says Amin. "It's an antioxidant-rich face wash that helps detox the skin while removing makeup, oil and impurities."
